Warranty Service - Oil Change

So I had my annual oil change this morning, as per my BMW Warranty.
That means one free oil change per year, even if the actual mileage is less than the 25000 km service interval.
According to the service indicator, I actually had 14200 kms left til my oil was used up !
So I have an appointment, am greeted by the Warranty Administrator who is subbing in as a Service writer cause it's a Saturday appointment.
My key gets scanned, proper papers are signed, and I am directed to the lounge for Expresso and Oreos (cookies). TV and Wi Fi are also available, but as a newbie, Im more interested in chatting with others waiting for their cars.
Pretty posh so far ...
About 45 minutes later ..I'm retrieved. Car has been washed. They wash it every time you come in ...
Im actually getting used to this treatment.

What's my problem you are thinking ?
Nothing really. I still have a year left to blow the Zed up, so most issues are minor and can be ignored for the next 364 days.
However there was one thing that I don't understand.
The Service Writer tells me that the oil has been changed, new filter etc, but that the Service Indicator has not been reset . (???) and that when I run up the 14200 kms, that I can return for another free oil change, provided I put those miles on in the next 364 days.

Now this is a tad confusing. Makes me wonder. The official bill indicates oil and filter @ no charge / Warranty. And the Dealership has a very high level of customer satisfaction. So I have no reason to question whether the oil was actually changed (No dip stick to check this). Why would they not update the service interval ? Unless they want to see me in about a year for a last inspection before I am out of full factory warranty when I expect brakes / rotors and tires might be ready for replacement.

Just curious if I am missing something here .

Sounds normal. Some servicing is mileage based - the service you've described sounds time based. The indicator on your car's on board computer is mileage based, so I wouldnt expect it to be reset for a time based service.

Hope this makes sense.

In the UK service is either every two years or 12-15,000 miles. Whichever occurs first, the mileage being based to some degree on how the car had been driven. Sounds as though you are getting an interim oil change , don't know why that would be.

Sammyz..
In the Great Used to be White North, BMW requires a yearly oil change or 25000kms, whichever occurs first.
I would expect the difference in intervals is a response to the more extreme weather we used to have over here.
There was no charge for this service so colour me happy but confused.
