warning light - what is it?

Hi,

I recently had a new back box put on the car, and have also changed the air filter more recently to an aftermarket one. Since fitting the air filter I have a yellow light on the dash, it looks like an engine its near the 3000 rev mark, it is the one above 'EML'. What has likely caused this - i have since changed the filter back to the original - how can I reset the light?

Lamda, maybe the MAF sensor too...

I have this light on at the moment, and although the car ran a bit lumpy over the weekend (and spoilt my chance to make the NE run (still bitter about that!)), it now seems to be running fine!

Code check at a dealer will tell you (and they'll be able to clear the light).

Is it one of these:

Lambda one is an upside down 'y' (the greek lambda symbol). From the description it sounds like a picture of a rotary dial with the needle pointing at a random number? If it is that's the cruise control one isn't it? In which case if its on when the CC is off, it means a fault in the system.

Pretty sure there is a page in the manual that'll have them all in and tell you which one it is. Either way, its probably a trip to the dealers for you and your cheque book!

ah well, that was an excuse to go for a spin :D

The one above the EML is the MIL - Malfunction Indicator Lamp. It means the ECU knows something's not right - i.e. the change in exhaust has probably changed the back pressure and as said above, resulted in the MAF/MAP and lambda readings probably being different therefore it's flagged up an error.

A back box is unlikely to cause an EML as its nowhere near the Lambdas. The only time a Lambda with trip the EML if the post-CAT sensor detects emissions that the CAT should have filtered out. Lambdas dont detect pressure/flow (only Oxygen content of the exhaust gas).

Its most likely that your MAF has been damaged by oil from the aftermarket filter... There are ways to clean them (google!) but id try to get the car scanned before tinkering. Its likely that neither caused it!

Where abouts are you?
