As per the title. 3.0 is a sweet spot IMO between underpowered and turbo variants. Choice is sparse on the main Classfield websites atm.

Any info appreciated.

Hi I looked at the 3.0, six pots very attractive, however if you can get over the 4 pot issue, any of the 1.8i,2.0i,2.8i would re-chipped easily out power the 3.0 version, even if that was chipped.

When chipped torque in the 4 pots is ample, IMHO

Also arguably with 70kgs less mass in the engine bay, and mass aftt of front axle a lot sweeter handling..again IMHO

It may give you many more purchase options: colour/spec etc etc

I expect flames anytime.. 8) :poke:

You still wouldn't get the Six noise though.
I wouldn't swop my 30i for 28i even if its more efficient

At the risk of accusations of further antagonistic behaviour...

You could load a CD of suitable noises....

The 6 cylinder is a must for me, especially running a diesel 1 series Monday to Friday - I need it as respite!

Plenty of 23i about but can't help but feel they will leave me wanting more with 200~bhp on tap. Although I haven't driven one.

I think you answered your own question..

From a post hindsight perspective if I was going to do it, I would then go for a 3.5 not s..that will give you plenty of BHP headroom, if you do, at some time, yearn for more..again IMHO

If you are going to have the impact on handling you may as well have the option of lots more grunt..

Obviously your budget/goodies trade off would need re-visiting..

I started at £8,500 on a 2.5 Z4 E85 and ended up at £17,500 on a 2.0i E89..

You have to ask the question why did BMW drop it (the 3.0) from the lineup if it was functionally that good..

I would guess it's the emission levels/economy that killed off the n52 3litre engine, it's not as clean as the n20 & that's what companies strive for these days :? It's a shame as they are really nice to drive.

Welcome (back) OP.

I think you might find a 23i disappointing after having had a 3.0Si so a 3.0 makes sense, although I don't think there are that many about.

As someone suggested I'd also be very tempted by a manual 35i if I was looking for an E89. I know plenty of owners really rate the 35is, but I just wouldn't want a fun car to have a pedal missing!

Good luck with the search.

Thanks Iain.

We shall see what the search throws up over the next few weeks.

Assume all is well with your Zed ownership still?!

Hi Matt,

Hope it doesn't take too long to find one you like.

All good with my Z4 thanks - just heading towards swapping to non-RFTs, so from what I've read it should get better!
