If you're lucky enough to have the pre-wired car, fitting is an absolute doddle. If not, you'll also need the loom, which costs £15-£20, and makes the job a little more involved, but still fairly straightforward.
I bought stalk and loom from BMW dealer and total cost including VAT (not p+p) was £96.

Yes, you definitely need a loom as the cutoff was Sept 2004 for preloomed cars.
In terms of the cowling, take off the existing cowel & inside you will see a conveniently raised outline where the cruise control stalk should fit... just dremel that out & bob's your uncle, no need to pay for a new cowel.
The wiring loom, however, is a little more challenging. Had a look, though there seems to be a few different wiring variants & in the end decided to pay someone to wire mine up... & glad I did as he had a few challenges before he got it to work.
Remember... there's no light to say cruise on/off...;

i have one to sell with the cut cowell for £50 no offers...
you can then take it off come sale time and put your uncut cowell back on.

theres no light for cruise as standard,,,, so as you touch the accelerator clutch or brakes it disengages,, i didnt have a light on my 320c and i dont believe there is even an icon for one on the dash panel..
If you have a preoct or sep 2004 then it is a straight fit with the loom already present.. if after this build date then you will need the additional loom and then have to cut into the wires to connect, there is a how to in the errrrr how too section
