I received my insurance renewal quote a week or 2 ago and it wasn't pleasant. £938 fully comp with 10 years unprotected no claims based on up to 5000 miles a year, parked on the driveway in a not too good Liverpool postcode, and no claims or convictions at all.
I tried all the comparison sites and some individual insurers and nothing came up less than £938. I reduced the mileage to 4000 as i will not do any more than that in a year and that didn't make too much difference.
I then rang up my insurer (Esure) and asked them to reduce my mileage to 4000 a year and add my girlfriend to the policy. The new price the lady quoted me with the 2 amendments was an amazing £578, all because i added my girlfriend, and possibly because her occupation is police officer i don't know.

So the moral of the story is if you want cheaper car insurance get your girlfriend (who is a police officer) on the policy. Even if you don't have a girlfriend, wife, partner, whatever, add a female that you know to your next application and see if it helps save some money.

Police officer is actually not a good job for driving risk, so perhaps if your girlfriend is job less it might be even better

This is only the case if said gf does not have any points as otherwise that will increase the premium.

I'v always added my wife to my policy even though she never drives the car just to reduce the premium.
I was told some years ago by my then insurance co when I had to reinsure my Granada 2.9 to insure it in my wifes name and have me as the named driver to reduce the premium even more.
Just dont make sense.

Like your thinking Taz, Could be an interesting call to the ins people! 8)

My renewal was £433 on the z last year, 3.0i, 30 years old with 8 years no claims living in Cornwall. Adding the GF dropped it down to less than £350.
I've added random female friends in the past and the savings are always considerable. Dunno if this is set to change with the recent EU ruling though. Insurance companies must be laughing all the way to the bank

I remember the days I was paying over a 1000 for a 205 diesel nearly 10 years ago!! A girl I lived with had a 306D turbo and paid half what I did with 2 write-offs in her recent past. 6 months later and the 306 was no more too......... :headbang:

Off original subject but related ........

Those multicar insurance deals seem worthwhile if you are looking to save further.

Im with Admiral and was quoted £460 (with a £500 excess) to renew.

As the other half has just bought her first car I tried it out. Reduced mine to £400 (with £150 excess) and my partners down from £950 on a single quote to £660.

Thats a saving of £350 that I can use to celebrate Wales winning the 6 nations later this afternoon.

It doesn't make sense!

You'd not hear an insurance company tell you that now though, as this is 'fronting' - although it's usually a parent fronting for a inexperienced younger driver (son, daughter, toy boy/girl), rather than a wife for a husband, but it's likely to have the same outcome in the event of a claim (if they find out).

I had to take my 'females' off my policy this year as one wrote off her own and another's car, and the other has had her licence 'downgraded' to automatics only

I guess the new laws on sexual discrimination by insurance companies might make this 'trick' less profitable in the future, but some insurers are their own worst enemies. For example, when the truck scraped passed my Z4 last year, I picked the bodyshop, picked the contract hire car firm and told the insurer there were no injuries. Less than a week later (and about every 3 months since) I get a call from a solicitor 'appointed' to my case for my personal injury claim. Despite me telling them I've got no injuries due to the accident being between me at 0mph and a truck at 5-10mph, they keep calling back. I don't know this solicitor from Adam, and someone in the insurance company has passed my claim details on to them for a couple of quid commission.

If insurance companies are losing so much money (as some would have you believe), then you'd close shop and concentrate on an area where there is profit. You wouldn't be trying to turn your client's £1000 claim into a £6000 claim with injury/car hire costs when there's no need, and then you wouldn't also keep having to raise insurance by 20% a year to cover 3rd party injury claims and extortionate car hire costs (at set rates that the insurance industry agreed to).
