Want to carry a spare

So, what's the smallest possible wheel I can get to have as a spare in the car?
 
I was under the impression you need a 17" space saver to clear the brake calipers on the front of the Z4?

Anyway, that's the diameter I went for. I bought a 17" space saver from ebay and it certainly fits. Think it came from a 330i/d. Not sure on the tyre profile without going out to the garage to check though.

interesting.. so for a space saver you can still use a wheel an inch or so smaller than the other three ?

The space savers have a much higher profile, if you think about it they need it as they are only about 4" wide.
 
One comment here - once you've put the spacesaver on the car what do you do with the original wheel/tyre? Will it fit in the boot?

A full size wheel will fit in the boot that I can confirm, but not much space for anything else.

And you cant fit 2 full size wheels in, I have tried with the 2 front tyres I removed had to bring one home on the passanger seat which was also a struggle.

tire size is 125/80/17, had to buy from stealers as normal tire/independent shops do not have the tires and rims
 
The Z3 was funny. Space saver in a cage under the boot, but wouldnot take the punchered wheel. And also would not fit in the boot................... You were supplied with a bag, for it to go on the passengers seat or the passenger.

Did they give you another bag for putting the passenger in the boot then? :D

Can confirm a full-size rear 8x8.5 wheel with tyre/tire fits in the boot of a non-M Z4, but leaves next to no room for much else.

I got lucky on ebay with buying my unused space-saver, they do come up very occasionally.
 
Basically, if you want to keep the wheel with the flat/damaged tyre after fitting the spare, you need the space in the boot to fit a full-size, so you may as well just fit a full-size in the boot and have done!

Not really Dave, as you're not likely to get a puncture every day, touch wood! You'd only want the spare to get you to a tyre fitter.
 
The regular tire will fit in the boot, but you will have to leave your luggage on the side of the road. :D

Yes, but as Z4WAM said, the day you do, which are you leaving at the roadside, the full size wheel that won't fit in with your luggage, or your luggage?

Point is, if the full size and your luggage may have to go in the boot at any given point because of a flat, then you may as well just drag around a full size anyway... at least you won't fit more in your boot than you can to fit the full size in, in the event of a flat!


I'd prefer to take tins of foam personally, than be stuck at the roadside with too much stuff to fit in the car! (those rear tyres are huge and take up 65% of the boot!)

I agree with Mr Wippy, it's would be sods law that when you get a puncture you have a boot full. Best solution has to be couple of cans of gunk and a mini compressor The boot is small enough already and to loose more space to a wheel and jack no thanks.
 
Trouble is with the tyre weld stuff is that it ruins your alloys, you can't fix what could be a small puncture on the tyre, and fitters quite often don't want to do it.
 
Ruins your tyres I agree but why does it ruin the alloys.

If it's in for a short time my fitters said they can even fix the puncture, still cheaper than runflats anyday.
