Wales road trip

Hi folks. Starting on Saturday I am going on a road trip through wales, we’re booked into a nice hotel just off the M4 for the first night and then plan to drive North on the A470, when we reach the top will travel back down via the coast Rd.
Any ideas on any roads that I must drive on. ?
Things you think I must take with me. ( I have good green flag cover ).
Any MUST see places ?

Thanks in advance.

Did you know there is a large drive out on Sunday in the north... check out https://www.facebook.com/events/2821385087926234
41 zeds so far??

If you're enroute to the north avoid the A470 northbound from Brecon to Builth Wells and take the B4520 instead which hugs the eastern edge of Sennybridge Firing Range (watch for sheep). Rejoin the A470 in Builth and head to Rhayader and then the B4518 to Staylittle. Take a left onto the Mountain Road to Maccynlleth and then the A487 into Dolgellau where you can pick up the A470 to Snowdonia National Park or you can branch right at Trawsfynydd and take the A4212 to Bala. Great roads!

Llangollen over the Horseshoe pass to Ruthin then over to Cerrigydrudion through the Clocanog Forrest .From Cerrigydrudion head down the A5 and take the Bala road. From Bala take the road to Trawsfynydd, this stretch of road is one of the best in N Wales.

Branching off the above, the B4391, to ffestiniog is epic ,a must do. :driving:

+1 for the b4391. Also the b5105 ruthin to cerrigydrudion is a cracker and will lead you on to Evo triangle

Thank you all for your great replies. I have adapted my route to incorporate your recommendations

Really looking fwd to these great roads.
Cheers.

If you are on the A470 try running parrallel on the A4059 stopping at the Penderyn Distillery. This road comes out at the base of Pen y Fan and joins the A470 to Brecon but is a much nicer road right across Brecon - watch out for Sheep and ponies and bikers, I was there on Monday - very busy in the afternoon.

If you only drive one road in Wales then it has to be the B4391. Start at the Afon Tryweryn end and when you get to Ffestiniog turn around and do it in the opposite direction. Repeat.....all day ! :D
The road from Llanidloes over the hills via Staylittle to Machynlleth is also fantastic. Make sure you do it in that direction
Don't bother with the Evo Triangle...highly over rated and now spoilt by 50mph cameras and mobile speed cameras :(

Slightly biased here I know, but don't forget to try out at least one section of the A44! :driving:

A4059. BRILLIANT

Glad you enjoyed it!

As my European tour was cancelled this year, and as the forecast looks great for the next few days, I've decided to go on an impromptu tour of the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. I planned the routes this morning and then saw this thread - and spookily most of the roads mentioned are already included! I'm staying in Chepstow tomorrow night, then I have two full days touring covering 460 glorious miles, with an overnight stop half way in Aberystwyth.
