Vred Vorti Tyres Twitchy on the Motorway!

Hi everyone!

I invested in some Vredestein tyres a couple of weeks ago and I find them very twitchy on the motorway.

At 70 the seem fine then from 80 to 90 the steering is nibbling away and doesn't seem to settle except on the smoothest surfaces.

In most ways I am very happy with them but this is quite annoying.

I had them laser aligned at the time of the new tyres and I am running the fronts at 32 psi and the backs at 35.

Does any body have any ideas what could be causing this?

Cheers!

You might have the psi slightly high.
Try 30 front and 32 rear.
Was the car weighted properly for the alignment?

I've just had Ultrac Sessantas as the vorti wasn't available in a 265/30/19 size and they are amazing. Went to the Midlands meet and the difference is like night and day at 25 and at 95 it is rock solid....
Since the vorti is supposed to be an upgrade its got to be the pressures or you might have some worn bushes?

The tyre fitters knew what car it was and put what looked like plastic jerry cans in the boot and on the seats.
They asked me which model it was when I was there so they should have got it right.

As I'd just had a service before the tyres were put on i had asked a the BMW main dealer to inspect the bushed
as the front tyres had worn very unevenly. They said the front bushes were fine.

Would that much amount of pressure really make a difference?

Did on mine. Try it and see?
Hi Greg, I did what you said and I would say it improved things but I can still feel it.
I drove down the M4 today from Swindon to Cardiff and it still likes to pull and wander.

Think I'll go back to the tyre fitters and have a word!

How many miles?

Check the drop links front & rear plus steering tie rod ends, as I needed to do these (along with the lollypops) to sort my steering out... now very nice.

Hi zeld4 just ordered a set of Vred Ultrac vorti for my Z4 3.0 E89 so am interested in your comments, how are things now? what pressure have you settled on and what are your feelings re performance.I was figuring 32 on the fronts and 36 on the rears would be interested on your comments

Hi Baza,

I've settled for 33 at the front and 36 at the back. I did try 30 front and 32 back as many recommend on here with the Sessantas. Although that made the ride better it made the handling just too soft. You could feel the tyre deforming on slower tighter corners and it just didn't feel taught enough. The tread pattern on Vortis are completely different to Sessantas which might be why.

With these tyres the ride is still firm, not runflat firm and also tyre roar is less.

Most importantly when going for a blast they are absolutely brilliant! I feel so much more confidence through the steering, and braking is far less twitchy.
Also in the wet they are superb. From a rolling start in first gear in a straight line it's amazing how much throttle they will take.

It's surprising by how much difference just a couple of psi make to how they feel and perform.
Would be interested to know how you get on!

Hi Zeld 4 Thanks for the info, looking forward to my new Vorti's and losing the Bridgestone R/flats .Get them fitted on Tuesday and of to the East coast on Thursday so a mixture of country roads and motorway, will let you know how I get on, Your pressures are in line with my thoughts. Thanks

Baza

Hi Zeld 4
Had the run flats removed and the Veld Vortis fitted and the difference is like night and day. The first things you notice is the ride and the noise or to be more specific the lack of noise.First the ride . Gone is the tooth shaking effect experienced every time you went over a patch in the road or a change in surface, now the car just rides over them , the reduction in tyre noise is incredible its now possible have a conversation with the passenger. Tram-lining is a thing of the past you can actually drive the car now. The grip is fantastic and the rears respond instantly when you put your foot down. Overall I am impressed.

No doubt this could be achieved with other tyre makes and specs but for me the Vredstein Ultrac Vorti is the way to go.

Tyre pressure I stuck with my gut feeling of 34 psi on fronts 225x40x18 and 36 on rears 255x35x18. and the balance seem's fine, will keep an eye on tyre wear and adjust if needed.

Would I do the same again ,in a heart beat

Hi Baza, that's great news! Mine have been feeling better and better and I've been having some great drives recently.
I might up the fronts to 34 as well just to see how they feel as the higher pressure sorted the twitchy steering.

Your E89 is much better damped than my coupe si on sport suspension so the benefits must be even more obvious.
I just don;t know how they make them for that price. And they are really progressive, letting you know when grip is at it's edge in a very friendly way.

What do you think of the rib effect side wall though? Took me a bit of getting used to.

Hi Zeld 4

Yes the price is good, but for me it wasn't the deciding factor. After spending hours researching the various options I decided I wanted to go for a asymmetrical tyre the engineering concept makes sense to me,so my choice was between Goodyear Eagle F1 or the Vred Vortis. When i checked the various web sites and forums the Vortis came out with flying colours and they were cheaper .a double whammy .

I haven't driven on the edge (as yet), Im still amazed how the car corners at what I consider pushing it,and as yet not felt insecure

The rib pattern on the side-wall I think looks good and distinctive, Put some dressing on the tyres and they look really class'y.

If anyone's out there considering changing from run flats you will not be disappointed with the Vredstein Ultrac Vorti
