Voltage and Amp Questions

Just bought a router from Ebay which has been supplied with a third party power supply

Router needs 5V and 2400-2800mA(min)

The original power supply I have has a quoted output of 5V and 2.5A

The supplied power supply is 9V and 0.5A

I reckon this is danergous, andbody confirm for me

thanks

Using a 9v power source for an item that wants 5v is a definite no-no, you will have smoke :fuelfire:

probably just lose the zener diode that's protecting the input though (puff of smoke, then no workie). Of course, you're not sourcing enough current to run it properly as well. My netscreens will run with higher voltage supplies, never tried using too little current.

just get a cheap 5v adaptor off ebay... don't worry about the amps being too high, it only uses what it needs, but over volting is not good (Ovrkll, correct me if I'm wrong)

you have it correctly, but also ensure that the power supply is capable of the current draw, wouldn't want the power supply to burn itself up trying to provide current it is not capable of

I seldom get a chance to speak electronics. My ASET has gone to waste since I work in networking and servers now. All that beer, all that studying and now it's wasted time.

He is correct. You will most likely blow the diodes. Also, those diodes are a polarity protection. If you get a power supply (ps) that has positive on the wrong pin, it might blow the diodes also.

Running a ps that is undervolted, then the router most likely will not work. A higher voltage my blow the diodes also....

I higher current ps only gives you a better power margin. The unit drawing the power will only draw as much as it needs. If you use one that has a borderline current output, you risk blowing the ps over time. It will just burn it self out. I have seen some ps's that are underpowered that will run the equipment but till die later on....

Doctor Electrical Engineer is now stepping off his box...

by the way a big  :dance2: :yeah: to your sig from my wife, son, and I

Oh, my grandfather was on the USS Oklahoma, Dec 7th. 1941. He was a Second Class GunnersMate, in turret number two. He lived through it all...

I retired from the USS Oklahoma City, SSN-723. Life is strange.......... :)

The picture on my avatar was actually taken by me about 10miles from the North Pole... :dance2:
