VIN (vehicle identification number) check?

1) Does anyone know if the VIN (vehicle identification number) check brings up any relevant info and if it does, which site is best to use?

2) Also, is there any database online with reported-stolen vehicles, so you could check a potential buy before paying for stolen property?

Not sure about any 'public database' for VIN checks - the best place is to go to your local BMW dealer who should be able to give you your vehicle history from BMW records. As for stolen vehicle databases - individual countries will maintain their own databases for checks by the local law enforcement agencies but these are not generally available to the public. Some countries have various private companies who will carry out various checks to see if a car has been involved in an accident or has been the subject of crime (Internet search for your country will show these). INTERPOL will allow for checks to be made across member countries but this is normally the result of a significant criminal act and not by individual/ personal request. For your information Romania is a member state of INTERPOL.

If you are buying a second-hand car than carry out relevant paperwork checks yourself - this will often reveal discrepancies which can raise the alarm. Check my signature link for a list of relevant pre purchase checks which will help you identify a potential problem.

That list in your signature was the first thing i took notice of when I "landed" on this forum

I know Romania is a member of the interpol  but i was not refering to such checks, the regular BMW records will do just fine...and I suppose i could give it a try at my local police station, to make sure it's not reported stolen or anything...although I doubt that they will be of any help. They generally are not.

Good luck with your search for a vehicle, I'm sure you will find one but walk away from anything your not sure about. If buying privately they don't arrange a meet at anywhere other than the owners house or at least premises he/she has some real association with - for obvious reasons.
