VIN Numbers?

does anybody know much about VIN/Chasis numbers?

do we know are the VIN numbers sequential and dowe know the very first VIN number?

For sure they are sequential but don't know if they start at 001 year 001 or each year within a specific model from day 1
 
so if 'The 12th through the 17th character in your BMW's VIN indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturer's assembly line. The last four characters are always numeric' then i would think this number is sequential, but this is not so???
 
my fellow coupe owners have let me down :cry:

just needed a couple of you to tell me third letter of you vin number :cry:

I think the S may signify its an M but I need more replies
 
ok, so far all M's have an S as the 3rd letter, what for SE's and Sports?

WBS:

W =Germany
B = BMW
S = ///M (possibly)
