I'm in the process of replacing the rear wheel bearings on my e89 and trying to sort a clunking noise that I was getting over speed bumps that I thought was from shock absorber mountings. This has meant taking out the trailing arm to remove a seized hub at which point I discovered there was nothing wrong with the shock mounts but the source of the noise was a failed vibration damper that is attached to the trailing arm near the main bushing with a long bolt see picures. I think it may also be knocking on the aluminium A frame under the car which bolts on between the diff area and the sides of the car but can't be 100%sure.Anyway the local dealer can supply new ones at £101.76 an absolute bargain. This begs the question are they actually needed and what are the ramifications of removing them entirely?
