VED Increases

Apologies if there is already a thread for this but i couldnt see one.

There is a lot of talk about big increases in vehicle excise duty from April 2026. From what i can see this is for vehicles with CO2 emissions over 225g/km. My 35i has 210g/km so i should be OK.

Is anyone's Zed affected by this increase?

35is was £430(ish) last year (if paid in one chunk).

AFAIK only a few specific older vehicles have had new rates announced, the standard band announcement has not yet been made for April 2026.

There is speculation in a few media outlets that the new rates will go up across the board by about 5% - likely to be about right.

>225g/km has been the tipping point into the £700+ rate of tax for the last few years, so although a bit dearer, no real change to note IMHO.

.. just checked by new grandad express - goes from £165 all the way up to £170 if the media guesswork is correct..

Flip!

i am sure my 35i was in excess of £400 last year (in a single payment)

Price increase from 1st April 2026. For the E89 as I understand it:

18i, 20i, 28i goes from £265 to £275
23i, 30i goes from £395 to £410
35i goes from £430 to £445

Increase in line with inflation and this is obviously paying in one lump.

Now, if only they would fix the roads with our 'road fund license' instead of buying themselves new moats for their castles etc etc etc.

It's a liberty, nothing more, nothing less.

Its not been called the road fund licence since 1936 which is also when it stopped being used to pay for the road which are now funded from general taxation.

Vehicle Excise Duty being the more correct term!

Not at all ringfenced for fixing roads but goes into a general government pot .

thats not too bad considering

E89s are all a bargain!

My 330i cost £430 last year and the Vehicle tax reminder I got last week for my MC is £760.

Are we sure someone is getting confused with the 'first year rate'?
First year rate only for anything new from April, with over 225g/km is going up a lot to something like £6,000.

One question, while on the subject of car tax........if I pay by DD from March, do the payments go up from April, or do we get a year at the old rate?
I am thinking of doing DD for the first time, as when I SORN they still issue a cheque which I can't pay in anywhere cos all the banks have been shut! :headbang:

And NO, I won't download my bank's APP to pay in a cheque, cos I don't want to!

Based on what it says on my renewal the monthly DD stays the same for 12 months.

I have SORN'd mine in the past. If you have an account with any of the 4 main banks I think you can pay cheques in at a Post Office - certainly can for Barclays.

I'm with Wanklays Bark too. Unfortunately I can't be doing with the half mile queue at all our local post offices at all hours. Seems to be full of pensioners buying one stamp, or the 'benny brigade' posting shite they have sold on eBay to supplement their 'income'. ;)

I understand that.

However the 'tax' was created for the purpose of building & maintaining the roads - hence 'road fund license', and later subverted to just be a grab of money from people who happen to have a car, used for whatever purpose they like.

There is also an ongoing rationale touted around that larger vehicles should pay more, or heavier vehicles should pay more, all due to the fact that they cause more wear & tear on the roads. Why is that a thing if the charge has nothing to do with the roads anymore?

That's my objection it's all just a politicised scam, with language & thinking intended to deceive IMHO.

Happy to go round the houses on my stance, but I'm 100% correct & will not be swayed.
