Vauxhall - Siri eyes free

Wow I've just seen the ad on TV for the Vauxhall Adam. Love or loathe the car, its been equipped with SIRI eyes free. C'mon bmw what the hell are you doing letting a euro box get one up on the tech?!

http://www.apple.com/uk/ios/siri/

So full integration to send texts emails play whatever music ask general questions directions dictate messages etc all the functionality of Siri and where is BMW with their what's starting to look like an outdated proprietary idrive?

I noticed it on the Vauxhall Adam ad on the TV earlier, I'm not sure how well it would work in reality, looks cool but driving a car called Adam for us blokes could be construed as iffy.

I would never own a VX again, have a wander over to VXROnline and read the disgraceful paint problems on Astra GTC and how VX are dealing with it :( Feel sorry for the owners.

Nah the point being that BMW is on Apples own page as integrating this stuff and then you get a cheapo car from GM arriving now with this on board. Like it or loathe it, its a good bit of tech to have on board.

Haha, too true about the name, imagine telling your mates your off to climb inside Adam, or put something in Adam, or that youve got a really filthy Adam, and so on....

Had a Vectra VXR a few years back, the paint wasnt too bad then as I had the Arden Blue which is an awsome colour. Even more years back I had a Flame Red Vectra which needed polishing every 2 weeks to keep the paint fade away.

Back on topic though, BMW really need to come up with a few new gadgets. The 4 series is pretty dull inside, there isnt anything that makes you 'want' the car, since its just like driving a 3 series.

BMW werent listed in the keynote when this was announced....which was really surprising considering (I think) BMW were the first to integrate iPod into the car audio system.

I think they've since said it is because the dev time is so long, and they have a lot invested in iDrive. Thing is, I reckon it could be integrated without too much trouble, and probably without more hardware, but BMW seem to like to restrict things to having the correct boxes ticked when the car was built.

Here's what my f20 does.

Using connect I can lock/unlock, activate lights, activate horn, locate the car on a map and preset climate all through the app on my phone. New features will be added apparentry as the coms box allows.

Through pro nav you can send Google map routes straight to the car using your VIN. This was used on a recent meet to send to everyone the route.

It's not active yet but the coms box is also capable of communicating with the device in other cars as well as recording data. The plan is that cars will share information as they pass on the road. This can be anything from roadworks and accidents to weather.

Idrive also features mobile internet and social media integration although I have to admit it's pointless.

There are loads of other features to. Its worth watching some of the connected drive videos. Or pop into a dealer and ask for a demo as all dealerships now employ a 'genius'.

In comparison to a lot of systems drive is still one of the best to use. I think it would be a big mistake to tie any car to closely to apple right now. The iPhone is on its arse with market share now moving vastly in favour of android.

Interestingly when in the car today I invoked Siri on the iPhone, it connected up over the bluetooth in the car, like a phone call (I have a pre combox car so I can't do bluetooth audio streaming, not that I want to because that phone has hardly anything on it tbh) but anyhow it would then accept my commands over handsfree and spoke via handsfree so some integration is possible. As I have my phone in the centre armrest dock, its pretty simple to invoke it and I don't have to hold the phone to talk into it etc. As a test I blurted ' set a reminder at noon to have lunch' (all I could think of) and out of the car comes Siri telling me the reminder was created would I like to save/set it? I said yes, and it told me it was set. Press the button again to go disconnect. Well its not perfect but there is some integration there. I guess they'll just have to work on having the Siri button available on the steering wheel etc to get it easier to use...

Siri works from the phone on mine... Over BT... And strangely as does google maps reading out directions over bluetooth.

I use this all the time... To read and reply to texts while driving.

Do people actually use all this stuff?

Tim

It does make you wonder. Whatever is happening to just driving a car.

I did become adventurous a while back and bought one of those BluTooth thingies that streams music from the iPhone but thats as far as its goes and I hardly use that.

For those with idrive what do they do spend half an hour on it before driving off? :)

All good stuff but probably wasted on me :|

I refuse to use any phone in the car, just switch it off.

Tim.

siri is rubbish if you dont live in a place where the 3g is reliable enough. i tried it and it couldnt get the words right, was slow, didnt understand or would just simply not work as the signal had dropped off.

in the end it was safer and quicker for me to just type the message when i used to be up and and down the motorway alot. now i just don't bother.

my friends did get used to the random messages tho.

I was wrong with that post. I was thinking of IOS in the car.

Sorry. I'm not perfect.

(But I'm as close as you'll get!)
