Variable Speed Limit on M6 Birmingham

I had a meeting at Wolverhampton today. When I was driving on M6, I noticed that there were cameras behind variable speed limit displays for each lane. Some people said they are speed cameras (not average speed ones), some said they are just traffic monitor cameras.

Anyone here uses M6 regularly?

All the gantries have what look like speed cameras on them.

However, only abut 1/3rd are real cameras, and then they only go live when there's a speed limit displayed on the front. Even then I've seen people going 10mph over the displayed limit without them flashing.

I was almost had by them going up to Manchester,
you look up it on 60mph then the next one on 50mph ! not good :headbang:

Exactly the same as the M25 and other variable limits. People behind curse you for slowing down at them but only a complete idiot doesn't. I have the tickets to prove it.

There's 'slowing down' and there's 'almost coming to a complete stop'.

Whatever the displayed limit, it's perfectly safe to go at that speed on your speedo. You're guaranteed to be below the displayed limit, and a good way below the threshold at which it will flash (probably a good 10% over the displayed limit, or 10mph on your speedo).

My road angel only beeps at a handful of those gantries... so trusting the database is accurate more then half dont have camera's.

And like the M25 they are only active when they are lit up... otherwise i would have points on my license
