Vanos rebuild questions

For anyone that's already done a refurb of their vanos, I'm wondering if the e85 is susceptible to wear on the rattle rings? I wasn't intially going to do the rings but now I'm second guessing whether that's a good idea or not! Is it worth getting the kit with them? Or just get one without?

Its not common to need them on non ZHP M54 engines, although not unheard of either. The ZHP M54 is a USA/Canada only model with more aggressive cams. that said my OCD kicked in and I've always done them anyway on the ones I done over the years. I guess I just do it just in case, so I dont end up doing the job twice.

Also bear in mind it's not quite as simple as "while your there". You need nylon grips with a vice, impact tools and then IIRC need to dial in some preload, too.

If you're not fitting aggressive cams, I wouldnt fit the anti rattle rings.
They have nothing to do with wear or so. Their point is to reduce some slop thats there from factory.

Okay that's good to hear! Thanks everyone. I'd already purchased the kit but didn't get the rings! As you say MACK, I didn't really want to touch this vanos again if I'm already rebuilding everything else.
GuidoK I assume the said slop is all within permitted tolerances? i.e. if it's not broken, don't fix it?

Yes. The slop is from factory and not a result of wear on the bearings.
If it was wear, the rings wouldnt do any good, the bearings should have been replaced.

Also the 'anti rattle rings' have nothing to do with the rattle coming from an old vanos. Thats due to worn seals and I think the rattle comes from the relais clicking on and off to keep the (leaking) piston in place.

Decided to do this as well as I noticed my fuel consumption has been a bit crappy even when I try to be eco (10.6L/100km which is like 22MPG).

I think I ordered the same kit as kis (i6?)

Questions:

- do guys replace the metal vanos gasket as a mandatory?

- I've recently done my rocker cover gasket and maybe ran it for less than 2000km. Should be good to reuse? I poked it from the edges it's still nice and soft.

Not done mine yet but the kit doesn't come with one, since it's not going to break the bank I'm going to get a new gasket for the vanos before I go ahead and do it... probably over Christmas as it'll be a nice quiet down period for me. My rocker is due replacing anyway... not sure on the rule here. Maybe its good practice like with brake pads and new discs?

Hmm seems like the general consensus online is rubber gaskets that are still neat and tidy should be fine.

I think I will try and reuse mine since they're seriously so new - figure it's not too big of an issue to sort if it does need a fresh one since I've done it before.

The vanos gasket - where are you sourcing it from? I haven't asked my local supplier yet need to hunt down a PN.

EDIT: just checked my own maintanence records - gaskets have only just been on for 1000km... Woah I don't drive much!

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread but I figure someone reading it might be asking the questions I am - I hate finding a thread with the question im looking for with no follow up!

Regarding the rocker cover, read this from Biesan:

If the valve cover gaskets are over 40k miles (64k kilometers) old, then it’s prudent to replace them during this repair. If they are over 80k miles (128k kilometers) old, then it is a requirement to replace them during this repair, otherwise they might leak due to being dismounted and reused. These gaskets have an estimated lifespan of ~60k miles (96k kilometers) and replacing them during this repair requires no extra effort. The needed parts and replacement procedure are included as optional.

Based on that, if you're taking your rocker off for the vanos job and your gasket is still fresh, should be ok!
