VANOS rattle refurb, DIY or not

looks like my refurb kit has just arrived from besian systems.

the local indy has quoted around £350 to do the job, not including parts, which I have bought.

not sure if I should have a go myself over the weekend? I have done a few DIY jobs on my Lotus over the years, suspension, brakes, exhaust, steering rack. but im no mechanic

ive seen a few guides on here, just wondered if anybody has first hand experience, and if they would recomend it, or just pay the garage to do it?

I would need to buy a vice and an impact wrench along with a few other little bits.
 
I think one of two on here have had a go, although one of those may have been Shipkiller who's a different league to the rest of us.

The guide makes it look manageable, there isn't anything too difficult, but I suspect I would hand it to a garage to do. Especially if you have to buy other tools for the job - I suspect then £350 is looking a lot less of a difference between them doing it and you doing it yourself.

Also, if there are any problems they will have additional tools etc to hand. Plus they'll be fully insured < not that I am trying to put you off.
 
I am kind of thinking along the same lines,

you cant beat the satifaction of doing a job yourself though! but on the other hand I dont want to get half way through it and get stuck, Ive heard getting the Vanos out oif the tight space can be difficult for instance.
 
I think if you get it wrong the timing will be all out and you can do some serious damage.

did you look into Mr. Vanos?
 
tried to contact him many times, but couldnt get any answers to emails or phone calls, ordered the bits from the US, and it has just arrived.
 
na its not a job to do yourself one wrong move could costs you a fortune let the gaerage do it always got some come back if any thing happens :)
 
VANOS FIXED:

the local indy has fixed my Vanos rattle,

the car didnt really have any symptoms other than a small rattle (which most people wouldnt even notice), you could here it when revving the car and when 'blipping' the throttle at idle.

now its fixed the engine runs/sounds much smoother and there is a very noticeable increase in torque.

total cost:

besian rattle +seal kit £100

labour £300

gaskets/parts £50
