Valve Clearance and Shims!

Ok just what's the low down with these? does my car not have hydraulic lifters? ive been told shims are only for old cars? just noticed some tapping recently even though the oil was change at the start of Feb?

i thought that was the case! i seem to get getting a loud tapping from what seems to be underneath the engine! oil levels are fine as well! could something have "gone" she has just done 99,000 this week!

Ok so ive been told that as these engine have Hydraulic lifters, you don't need shims. but with a car that has 100k on the clock ive been advised that the valves could have worn and so that hydrolics can't adjust any further! ive been told that using some thicker oil could help with this issue? if so what oil should i use?
