Used 2003 Z4 things I've learned.....

Just a couple things I've noticed after owning my 2003 Z4 3.0 for about a year:

Brakes...get OEM or better!!! My car stopped on a dime and had great pedal feel until I put crappy O'Reilly Best rotors on the front and pads and rotors on the rear. Because they're harder than OEM they last longer but I get a cramp trying to floor my brakes in order to stop.

The Warning Chime... after a year of "some times it comes on, sometimes it doesn't" it decided to stay on for my entire drive home, even after shutting it down and removing the key several times....After looking up info it seems there's a software issue with the instrument cluster. 5 minutes after I parked at home and removed the key it finally stopped. Possibly need to replace instrument cluster with extended warranty, hopefully not.

Anyone else have passenger door that just decides to open itself? Mine has done this intermittently since purchase but since the "mechanics" can't ever seem to duplicate it they say there's nothing wrong and won't try to fix. it's happened about 12 times in the last 16 months. The door lock prevents it from swinging completely open but it's still disheartening to passengers whilst cornering.

Do NOT go for one with Premium Audio 10 Speaker Carver system if you want to use an iPod. Due to the special amp it'll cost ya an extra $200 or more over the $150 Dice adapter. Yes the Carver speakers sound great.....really great but damn it I wish it were easier and cheaper to plug in an ipod.

Anyway these are a couple the things I've figured out over the last 16 months of owning the best car I've ever had.

Hi.
Thanks for your post. I'm looking to get a very similar car to yours very soon (once I sell my current car). I've seen a 2.2 2004 with 47 000 on the clock. Is there anything you think I should look into closely when looking at potential Z4's? I know the rear springs can be an issue at a car at this sort of milage.
Cheers.

Thanks. I'm certainly not a wealth of knowledge like some of the folks on here, this is by far the best place to find the info you're looking for. I suggest using the search function or just scroll through all the posts until you find titles that match what you're looking for. That's how I got a lot of my questions answered.

Anyway, springs seem to be a big one, however I just hit 63K miles and still have what I think are the original springs. You also want to check the motor for the top as these can go out as well. Mine is starting to sound like it's straining quit a bit to lower and raise and sometimes I have to push up on the top to get it to release from the windscreen and lower. The good part is I purchased an extended warranty that will cover the top for another 18 months so it should be taken care of...if you can I'd suggest purchasing a warranty as they've covered $1800 so far and it only cost me $2000 for the warranty.

If you buy one make sure you look up the post about cleaning the drains at the base of the soft top. It's not too hard and can save you tons of headache in the future.

If it has Run Flat Tires installed and you think the ride is rough and jarring replace them with non run flats whenever you get the chance. I just put Hankook EVO V12's on mine and it's like I'm driving a completely different car. It's 110% better than before, more grip, less tire noise and soooo much smoother over small bumps, it really is amazing.

Again, this is by far the best forum I've found for getting answers about Z4's and I'm extremely glad to have found it.

Hi IAHphotog,

Just on the 10 speaker Carver system and adding ipod control/new head unit, what is this adapter you speak of?
I spent a whole day at an audio specialist last week who wired the whole car for a sub, parrot unit and then proceeded to rip it all out again as no sound was coming out of the speakers due to it being digially amp'ed. :fuelfire: Doh! :headbang:

I've since taken it to another company and they've had the same issue, they are trying to source an adapter but have been stumped so far.

I have an '04 3.0 z4.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
John

TheSkullery - I have the Parrot MKI9200 in my car and I have the 10 speaker carver setup, I installed it myself took about 2 hours max, and it sounds great. Have a look at the link in my sig and you should get an idea of what is needed. It's not that difficult if an installer can't do it, I would definitely go to a different shop if I was you.

IAHphotog - Sorry to hear about all the issues you have had. I have the same model & never experienced any of these problems before, hope you get them sorted soon

Maybe the newer Zeds have a different setup, because my 10 speaker Carver DSP system took to a Dice Mediabridge 1500 just fine. It was an easy 45 minute installation, with no DSP adapter needed in my case. My IPhone charges and is controllable from the steering wheel and radio buttons. I can also hook up a USB flashdrive with music, and it has a Sirius tuner connection. I don't use the included bluetooth, as I already have that feature in the car.

Thanks for the heads-up Wiseguy, I'll look into getting the Mediabridge 1500 and see if it'll work without the additional adapter.

Now I need to find out if the VANOS seal replacement is covered by the warranty I purchased. The shop I take it to here in Houston seems really good so, fingers crossed. Since I purchased the car it's exhibited the symptoms of the VANOS seals being wore out, I just thought at the time this is how it was supposed to run as I didn't know about this particular fault. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it can run even better after replacement.
