Took my E89 in for a first service today. The service dept manager and tech called me in to see 'something unusual', which turned out to be a rodent (mouse probably) nest on top of my engine beneath the engine cover. The pesky little f*cker had ripped up insulation from the bonnet lining, engine and bulkhead to make the nest.

The dealer has quoted me a reasonable(ish) price to replace the bonnet and engine insulation, but the bulkhead work would be expensive as the engine would have to come out to get access. I'll speak to my insurers tomorrow to see if I'm covered. I'm also wondering how to get rid of mice from my garage in a humane sort of way.

Not happy! :x

Fairly regular use. Probably 3 times a week and more in summer. Done 11,500 miles in 20 months.

Your lucky as our friend who live in a rural location had wiring looms and fuel pipes chewed thru by rodents on 3 separate occasions on their cars.

I'm not sure how they've prevented it happening since but I'll ask to see if they have an tips for you.

Thanks, any tips gratefully received.

We are in a similar location, river at the bottom of the garden and open fields beyond. Great view, but obvious drawbacks.

Used humane mouse traps before - then used to drop them at their new home in the way to work ( an old church yard ) lol

I'd use a proper trap to get the little sh1t, bloody things do some serious damage to cars and homes

Get a cat

Got one, but she don't seem too adept at mouse slaying just yet, maybe she's a bit young. Our old cat was always bringing in bits of mice, she passed away last year, maybe that's why the problem has begun!

I left the car on the drive tonight and the garage door open, hoping the cat will get the hint and do some mouse carnage

I got a cat that kills mice, chipmunks and shrews by the bushel - you can have the damn thing! AND, I'll pay to ship it to you. Hell, I'd even give you $20 just to take it! Just agree to never send it back or let my wife know I gave it to you and its yours. Soon as I can find my Kevlar gloves and vest, I'll wrangle it into its bulletproof cage and post it to you.

Went through a similar thing in our garage with half a dozen mice.

I'm not on my laptop but search for high pitch mouse deterrent or similar. It emits a pulsing high frequency sound to scare mice off - doesn't hurt them at all.

Sorry to hear this.
We also have a cat it brings more mice in than taking them out!!!
I had a mouse chew through my can bus network on mine. It was parked at my brothers workshop over Christmas. It was fairly easy to fix and cost about £500 to fix.

Dont forget if using a humane trap. You must release the mouse over a mile away or he will be back.

Fixed your post for you Matt

We live in the country and have had mice in the garage and even a rat up in the loft once - came up through a storm drain - pest control man put poison up on the loft - never had one back since  As for mice I've put poison in a couple of places on the rafters of the garage roof out of reach of anyone and put several traps there as well - haven't seen a mouse since :D :D

Best solution! We are looking at humane traps mainly because we don't want our cat to accidentally get injured or worse. I would release the little sods at the far end of the village, there's a river between us and them.

As for the car, the damage to the bulkhead insulation is very superficial whereas the bonnet and engine insulation damage has penetrated right through the thickness so they definitely need replacing.

Thanks everybody for your comments, some of them were even useful!
