unipart selling rear springs for £34+vat

following on from my request in the for sale section:

i thought i'd ask the wider audience on here. basically one of my rear springs has some rust spots on it so i'm just going to replace it.

out of interest i rang my local unipart & they have them on the shelf at £34+vat each :o

& this is for an M coupe!

bmw is circa £175 each by the way.

has anyone tried these? are they recycled old bed springs or something. i'm not in the habit of fitting any old junk to my car but at those prices i can buy two & replace both on the rear axle.

as i said in the other thread i usually think if something's to good to be true it usually is, but this time my flabber is well & truly gasted!

well i did a serach on my reg (which turned up the correct model) & recieved this link:

they only list front springs for the coupe but they are at £29.95 +vat which must be the £34 that i was quoted.

i'm going to pop down to have a look at what they have....
 
Prob worth changing them in a pair if you do want to swap them over... as if they are uneven will surely add more stress to the fragile oem springs.
 
Right been down & had a look, from memory they look identical. So I've bought one, if it's the same ill pop round (they're in the dog walk route from my house) later & have another for the opposite side. Fingers crossed if I get finished work at a decent time I'll get back & get it changed later so we'll see.
 
wasn't a forum member selling a set of 4 3.0si ones recently ? £50 ish all in ? felt like buying em for stock in case i need replacements at that money :)

The OP has an M which these wont fit.
 
Right, managed to get finished a wee bit early at work this afternoon do I went home & had a look.

As in the how to guides its a very simple job (I'm a hairdresser by trade so if I can do it anyone can!), just make sure you have a bar or length of wood to leaver the swing arm down to get the spring back in, something a couple of foot will do.

Got the old spring out & they're pretty much identical as far as I can see. Obviously the poundage of the spring can't be measured but after fitting the uni-part one I measured the ride height & it's almost exactly the same, yes it is a little higher but I'm guessing the springs will bed in over the coming weeks. The weathers good so I'm going to drive the car to work & see how this pans out.

To be fair, having gone round the block & given it a good swing about it feels spot on but with the relative ease of replacement & low cost I might as well just chuck one on the other side to be sure & get a geo done.
