Unintended Project thread (better late than never!) - 2003 2.5i Auto

......Going to try to get the GM5 module out tomorrow and get it off to a chap on eBay that fixes these things. Most of my symptoms point to a failure of that and the car is getting treated to a professional detail and headlight restoration this coming weekend. I know it sounds silly but I think the car looking better (the headlights are shocking right now!) will motivate me more to spend more time, love (and money!) on it.

Anyway moan over and pictures to follow post detail next weekend!

Car looks loads better (pics to follow) but the 'fixed' GM5 module hasn't actually fixed anything sadly, and I'm at a loss what to do on this now. I've posted a separate thread on this though here

Some pictures following a good clean and headlight refresh....

So the jobs list is now slowly reducing (well aside from this new central locking fault) and is now as below.

Some of these are more tricky / urgent than others. The central locking is an urgent one as we head into winter, because I can't shut the drivers side window fully and the heated screen (and some new heated seats!) would be nice as we head into the colder weather too. I do use the car regularly all year round.

I can have a go at the parking sensors and aux cable ones myself (along with some rust treatment), though the rest is definitely beyond my ability sadly, but enuff_zed / Usel are both amazing guys who will be able to hopefully help (fingers crossed you're not sick of me just yet! )

- Fix the central locking issue (thread is here for this)
- Fix aux cable previously fitted (I need some better tunes!)
- Diagnose and fix the rear heated screen (heated mirrors do work)
- Upgrade the seats to heated ones plus a leather refurb (Usel / Rob's work is incredible!)
- Tweak / adjust the steering column gearing to remove high speed 'twitchy' steering.
- Replace stuck rear eccentric bolts (so rear wheels can be aligned)
- Change diff oil and check coolant condition (I don't know if either have ever been done)
- Vanos refresh
- Fix the parking sensors
- Do a scuttle drain clear / flush and replace the broken scuttle clips
- Put the wipers in the correct sitting position
- Seats out proper carpet clean with a vax type wet hoover
- Some rear suspension / subframe surface rust removal and protection

"Maybe" jobs for the future (if I keep it long term)
- I've got a full set of the Carver DSP speakers, though I'd still need the amp / boot wiring loom and subwoofer brackets / grills (plus a forum members help!) to fit these.
- Do the top hifi retrofit
- Do a full rear suspension refresh / potentially replace or repair (shotblast etc) the rear subframe (need a lottery win for this one!)

Not been on here much lately or updated this in ages, though with holidays in October, followed by crap rainy autumn / winter weather once returning, being busy decorating the house and the ludicrously busy time socially December always is, sadly none of these are conducive to doing much with a Convertible car! Every weekend day I have managed to have free recently (and there have not been many) it has been horrendously wet! This weekend supposedly it's snowing, so at least the weather is mixing it up a bit I suppose! :headbang:

Enuff zed / Usel know this already, but I might sell the car at some point later this year. I suffer from arthritis, which is getting noticeably worse recently in my left knee / ankle in particular and I really want to own a manual 'fun' car again whilst I am still physically able to drive one. This would be a 40th birthday treat in October. Though if I do sell the Z4, I don't for a moment think it'll be the last Z4 I'd own. I can definitely see my future self in an E89 at some point!

That said, if used values are still as shockingly bad as they are at the moment, I'll just hold on to it instead. I will definitely be divorced if I try to convince my wife to let me have two fun cars on the road though sadly! So, I'd possibly look at storing the car away in my garage, or giving it to my Dad to keep it running, as given the huge amount of work (and money!) already thrown at this car, there is only so much money I am prepared to lose on it.

I've asked two garages locally to quote on the diff oil change and I've ordered the relay switch for the heated screen (if that doesn't fix it, I give up!), though hopefully next weekend I might finally have the weather to pull the door apart and at least test the new door latch mechanism I've had in my office for a couple of months now.

Hopefully time / weather will allow a visit to the wonderful Enuff Zed / Usel soon to have a crack at some of the other bits. I have another annoying new fault which is the wipers being very weak / easily moved by the wind at 30-40mph plus, so that's another job on the list! My sisters boyfriend has some decent ramps / stands etc and is going to help me with some rust protection work, which is much needed as we head into the coldest part of winter.
