Uneven tyre wear

So as I was getting my car ready to go to a meet on Sunday I thought I'd get on my knees and look at some of the stuff you never (normally) see as I'd noticed a bit of a wobble/vibration at 80mph on the motorway last Sunday.

I thought the tyres looked a bit iffy so popped into my local garage when filling with fuel as they are brilliant and although not BMW they have a couple of "german car" mechanics (apparently....)

Anyway to cut a long story short the inside shoulders have more or less disappeared. No tread pattern visible and the rest is just about illegal. They are the same tyres I bought the car with 18 months ago which were already worn as the alignment was way out then. I've had a 4 wheels laser job done but have been told BMWs (esp Z4s) wear the inside shoulder out quicker. Is that true? :?

I had an advisory after my MOT last june about tyres and have been looking for a new set of Vred Ultrac Sessantas (waiting for the offer that never came and saving like hell). I'm running 235/35/19s and 265/30/19s.

My local garage has given me the same price as I could get online at Tyreman, Camskill, MyTyres etc, thrown in fitting and another 4 wheel laser check for £40 total on top. It's booked in Friday so I hope to be legal and safe for the Midlands meet on Sunday.

Even when properly aligned, the inner shoulders will wear more quickly because of the aggressive camber for optimal cornering performance. This is mainly an issue with the rear tyres.

Having the alignment done & keeping the same tyres on that already worn uneven was possibly a waste of time & money :|
Re setting the geometry wouldn't suddenly make the tyres even themselves up .
A fresh set of rubber & fresh alignment is the way forward , if the problem re-occurs then something aint right :?

You're right of course but the tyres still had life left 18 months ago even if scrubbed up badly.
Full Monty treatment Friday so hopefully much better.

Let you know after the Midlands meet tomorrow. Drove about 4 miles Friday night and it felt really settled and solid. A good run tomorrow and then I'll update.

Well we've been to the Midlands Meet and back today. See other posts for piccies etc

What a revelation in terms of handling, comfort, road noise and tram-lining (which is now non-existent). :D

The car has gone from being a beast needing wrestling into submission to a compliant sports car.
I never realized how badly worn tyres could affect the handling.
On the motorway it's totally refined and the skittish back end has gone, she just feels planted and rock solid in every way. My wife had a go too and she really enjoyed getting the hammer down as she thought it almost undriveable before.......

One or two other forum members were saying today that they are having similar handling issues to those I was having and are looking to sort out some tyres soon.

Vredestein Ultac Sessanta

What tyres were on there before?

2 totally worn out sessantas on the front.

1 hankook something on n/s rear and 1 Nexen (?)on the o/s rear.
Knew they were bad when I bought it but they were legal at the time and (ahem) didn't have the cash to replace at the time.

Just didn't know how bad 'til today................

Good to meet you today Greg (and mrs Greg of course). Good to hear the sesantas are the way to go, just got to start saving! Only riding on 18's though so should be a little less. My car (on RFT's) is fine on the motorways just horrible on anything a bit chewed up
