After having some work done on my car my mechanic said that i was missing and undertray which provides a bit of protection and strengthening does anyone knwo what this part is i believe its un the engine/gearbox??

Try the link below .
There is a plastic tray which is just a protection but more importantly there is a cross brace made from pressed steel which acts as part of the chassis when bolted in position. This sits between the engine and gear box at the back of the suspension wishbones.

If you open the bonnet and look down the back of the radiator (in front of the engine) and you can see the ground below the engine I guess he means the plastic under tray is missing . If its the strengthening section you really need to get one! :o

Take a picture of the underside of your car from the front, we will be able to spot what is missing.

If its the plastic one, I'm selling one...

Cheers guys would i notice anything in terms of handling or the feel of the car if it were the strengthening bean i am not with the car at the min?

Not sure that you would if its never been fitted since you bought the vehicle. Only if you compare it against another Z. If it is the strengthener it really should be replaced as it does form part of the chassis. You will have to wait until you can check the car.
I am sure it will just be the plastic under tray ...........cannot see the cross member being left off

It'll definitely be the undertray. Not a chance in hell it's missing strengthening bars.

It's not an integral part, it just provides protection from speedbumps. I'm currently driving without mine as I took it off to find a leak, and i've had no problems with the car feeling weird.

I'm not sure i'd want to be without it for too long. I know on my Fiat it was there too protect certain components from stone chip damage and the steel cooling pipes under the radiator used to fail after a while, if it was missing. I'm sure there will be items that are getting a good rub down from stones and dirt, if it's missing. :o

The undertray may have minor benefit in stopping stray stones hitting pipes but its primary role is air flow.

I'd want it on soon so you get the correct airflow, handling at speed, cooling, fuel economy, etc
For sure you can drive without it with mo worries.
