Undertray attachment parts

I need a bit of help.

I broke the engine undertray (part 51717012723 - attached) some time ago and bought a replacement. I am trying to figure out what connecting bits I need to secure the tray in place with the rest of the car, so I can source them.

If i am not mistaken, the rear part of the tray connects with the front part of the engine reinforcement plate. I can't figure out what else the tray connects with - front bumper, wheel arches?
I can't make any sense of the BMW schematics.
Any help is much appreciated.

Is your new undertray exactly the same as the one in your photo ? If so then it is not the correct one for a 2003 2.5i. The part number you quoted is correct but it should look like this jkw3fd.jpg and the same as in this diagram also20190204_193250.jpg
It locates along the front edge in a groove in the bottom of the bumper and is then held up in position with about 8 x self tapping 8mm bolts and spire clips, numbers 3 and 4 in the diagram

Ah hell. I've missed that bit.
I gues it can be good and bad. Bad as I have the wrong part, good that i don't need any extra bits and you made it clear for me. Thank you.
Where does the airduct sit, is it connected to the tray?

Should have attached an image for a better understanding.
Apparently, number 1 on the attached image is the air duct.

Number 6 is clipped on the bottom edge of the radiator and I think the 'airduct' is actually 2 pieces, one either side on the bottom corners of the radiator that angle the air in from the lower radiator grille

You have the correct part. my car has the same one and

are you sure about that?!? Have you hands on experience?
I'm pretty sure the z4 undertray (part 51717012723) looks like the pic in the TS.
Mine does, and I've had it off at least 50 times.

Why bother with an undertray? Not having one is the most effective way of telling when ur camcover gasket starts leaking... via the oilspot u will see on the ground which would otherwise be caught by the undertray.

Youre welcome

I have kept bits of the shattered undertray and I just checked. The one I have is the one Patriot66 mentioned. This stuff is really confusing indeed. I vaguely remember now that the 2003 2.5i had a different tray for some unknown reason.
Now where the hell do i find one of those?

Much appreciated buddy, but fortunately for me, no oil leak. I fixed that a few months ago.

RDFlo has a 2003 2.5i the same as mine. Mine is the same as the one in my photo and diagram and during my 4 years of ownership I have removed and replaced it MANY times also. RDFlo has now examined the broken parts of his old one and confirms that his is the same as mine

RDFlo, I'd be interested in buying the 3.0l M54 underlay from you if it's no good to you & the price is reasonable. Mine's been missing ever since I had it.

Is this tray specific all M54 z4 engines or just for the 2003 2.5 M54?
I'm trying to understand when did bmw changed the design so i can track down a tray more easily.

I've just had a look on http://www.realoem.com/ and ALL undertrays from 2.0i N46, all M54 engines and N52 engines have the same part number, 51717012723. Only the S54 engined //M has a different part number. The diagram shown for all undertrays on Realoem is the same as mine and your broken one, however if you put the part number 51717012723 in on Ebay they all come up either new or secondhand as the simpler flatter version without the mouldings on the rear corners that mate up to the anti-roll bar mounts. At some point early on BMW must have simplified the design, kept the part number and not updated the diagrams
There is a brand new one on Ebay for £45 :thumbsup:https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153197260706

That's true. I've got in touch with the local BMW dealer and they even contacted the German counterpart and yes, they only have the flat undertray these days and recommended me to get in touch with some scrapyards.
I do have a flat one, but my mechanic said it doesn’t fit and needs some further bits to attach it to the wheel arch or, as you said, mate up to the anti-roll bar mounts. Hell knows that he wasn’t specific. He’s a cracking mechanic, but I’m starting to doubt his knowledge on cosmetic issues. Would you say the flat one couldn’t be installed if the car is set up for the undertray that you and I have? Alternatively, I should get under the car and have a look at it myself.

Help me understand something.
I think i got point 1. and 4. right, but what does point 2. and 3. connect to?

2 and 3 connect to side plastic parts that mask up the sides of the bumper (bridge the gap between underside bumper and wheelarch).
So they screw in to the inner/under sides of part 6:

What I don't understand is why only that flat tray has a rubber lip/air dam.
Thats imho an important piece to seal up the space behind the grilles so that the air is forced through the radiator and ac condensor (those parts seal pretty good against all sides so air can't escape along that way)

And none of those undertrays is for an M bumper? (that as an additional oil cooler on the underside so I could imagine thats a bit differenty shaped regarding that air dam)
