Under revving, paranoid

So on the weekend I insured my brother to have a go, and at one point after heavy breaking he slowed down but forgot to shift down... For 1 or 2 seconds the car shuddered slightly, the engine under revving until he pressed the clutch. No apparent problems after several hours of hard driving afterwards, but I'm paranoid some damage was done which might become apparent in the future. Does anyone more technically minded know whether this could have caused any serious damage, so if not I could put my mind at rest?

Cheers

I don't see how that could have done any damage, what you describe is basically nearly stalling the car. Stalling feels nasty but doesn't do the engine any harm, it's quite common. Over revving can damage the engine sure, but not under revving as far as I'm aware.

It would be harmful if you underrevved it habitually for a long time - too high a gear and the accelerator depressed. The camshaft bearings would wear out more quickly and the flywheel would take more strain.

A leaner driver car probably does this or a full stall in gear several times a day for its life.

Not an issue to have the slightest concern about.
