Just had a conversation with a trader friend of mine who is ex and ex BMW dealer manager. He says that BMW Uk have today got 5 new z4ms in stock for any dealer with ......wait for it........40% discount on list !!!

How have they managed to devalue it so badly? And how am I supposed to ever own more of my car than i owe !!

Anyone looking to buy new should be getting 25% off list if they choose one of BMW Uks stock.

I took a stock car in August instead of my choice of Sepang Bronze and paid £38k new from a list of £46K - I thought i'd done well but clearly could have done better !

By registering 95% of cars themselves, and then serially dumping them onto the used market in huge quantities :(

40% - can't believe it.

It could be worse - you could actually have ended up paying list-ish for Sepang :P

I'd like to see someone actually get them for that though. They still won't go on sale for much less than £33-34k i wouldn't have thought, and ever since the M arrived there's been ex-BMW cars available for that money....?

The dealers are getting them for 40% off list so i'de be looking for 30% off as a deal. That brings a decent spec car to £32K. I got about £7000 off mine and thought I was doing well. Now they're just devalueing all the 2nd hand cars for us and making me never want to buy another Beemer from a dealer. Thta tactic may sell more cars but it's turning off loyal brand buyers. I think it'll hurt them in the long run.

I remember thinking I'd done well getting £2200 off when I ordered mine.

Have to say its very disappointing from BMW how they have devalued these cars. Especially as in all fairness they should have been about 15-20% cheaper list price in the first place.

senwar, has it put you off, or would you have another one?
Difficult to say.

Its certainly the best, most fun, exciting car I've ever owned. I cannot praise the motor highly enough and the only criticism I've ever had of it is that the technology inside the car is a little dated by BMW standards (i.e. the Nav).

Saying that, I always said I thought the car was a good £6-8k overpriced, and still happily bought one. So with that in mind, I suppose it hasn't put me off.

Glad I'm not looking to sell though - I'd have a pretty different opinion then! My intention was always to stick with it for 3 years, which will be easier said than done as I've never managed that with any other motor, and even now I have designs on keeping at the end, whilst getting a daily run about to satisfy my new car needs every few years!

Its just disappointing the BMW have devalued the car in the way they have.

But whilst I was a bit nervous buying the car because of the price, I knew the losses I'd suffer anyway. And I wouldn't change a thing as I still love the car, the spec, colour etc. And would still buy one if I'd not got mine.

BMW residuals have taken a huge hit in the past 24 months but they are putting a new structure in place to combat this and cut the ridiculous discounts being offered by dealers.

If you want a new BMW get it in the next few weeks as it will be stopping!

I think now is a bad time to sell.

Initial price (loaded) of around £43-£46k was undeniably too high and too close to the more practical M3 with the same engine. So they depreciated hard initially and used values suffered, hitting the £32k-£35k mark - a fair premium over the 3.0s, which would go for around £30k. (in fact as the 3.0 has poorer residuals the M can actually be cheaper per month on a finance deal).

Next, BMW released a whole host of BMW GB cars and flooded the market, so if you were buying 3 months ago (like me!) you had plenty of choice...I had 6 black ones with good specs on my shortlist, all £35-£38k. Some dealers would discount, some wouldn't. A trader friend of mine told me BMW GB had a few more to release but would not sell any of them (trade) for less than £33k.

Now most of the BMW GB cars are sold, supply is lower again and prices really seem to have firmed up - the cheapest Nav equipped car I can find on the AUC site is an 11k miler 56 plate for £29995. So they have not moved hugely over the last 3 months...no worse than an M3 anyway. Give it another 6-9 and it will really level off, sell now and you will probably loose the most? Not as bad as those who offloaded 6 month old ones they paid list for, but still!!

As a side note, the Z3M Coupes apparently dropped in a similar fashion but now, good ones have become very desirable and prices are strong...these cars will never be an investment though

Says it all really

There's been a bit of talk on forums about BMW pricing in the UK from next year, and from having a quick look at some of the internet brokers today, the discounts have virtually gone now - previously http://www.coast2coastcars.co.uk/ were offering like almost £5k off a 335i but not any more. So maybe that will do a bit to stabilise the residuals, now if BMW UK stop registering management / demo cars or take higher end models off the employee lists then things will get better still.

I'm all for getting the next Z4 when it comes, but only if BMW sort out the residuals and stop registering car themselves.

When looking for a Z4M - the local dealers kept calling with ex managers cars with 1/2k on the clock. The number of lowish spec barely used cars in the dealer network was also suprising!

In the end I bought a 3.0 which had all the options I wanted and decided to let the depreciation on the Z4M and 987 boxster S take its course for another year, that said I'v really grown to like my 3.0 and will have to have a spin in a Z4M to see if its that much better (at the time I was only 24 and the dealers only let me ride as a passenger despite having 3.5 years fault free experience of a powerful RWD car with no driver aids! - grrr)

Thats really poor service...as a serious customer, expecting you to buy it without driving it seems a bit much! I'm 25 and Scothall (Hampshire) and Wood (Bournemouth) didn't have a problem with me driving them. 3.0 vs M has many different points, give one a go and see what you think! I liked both for different reasons

But was it £15,000 better ;) I wimped out after working out the likely depreciation and effective running costs over the next few years compared to a car that had already lost 55% of its retail price. Might have another look once the prices reach 25k in the dealer network :D

The lack of a test drive was all down to company policy and their insurance criteria, I was informed that no one under 25 was able to test drive a M car - I can understand that to a point as they must get a lot of test pilots hehe  :driving: .

I've got both and can honestly say YES! I took my roadster out for a blast yesterday and it's such a let down after the M.
