I think I saw the new Z4 is in a shoot-out on next weeks TV show on Monday.

Usual crap 5th Gear review. The Boxster is better on the track! Really? No real comment on the car at all.

I won`t defend the Z4, the review was pretty much what I expected. Previous Z4 was beaten slightly by the boxster, now the Boxster is a much better car - more proof IMO that BMW has taken the car in the wrong direction (SLK cruiser!!!!!). If they compared it to the slk no doubt the result would of been "the new Z4 is better than the SLK, it`s a better barge for cruising"

I guess you didn't drive it yet. Probably everyone who are saying its SLK with BMW badge didn't drove new Z4 yet.

I`ve sat in it though. Nice and more luxiorous but less sporty. it`s 200kg heavier isn`t it? BMW themselves announced they are aiming at the SLK market. the boxster/gayman is what the z4 should be. Although it is just a tv review, the fact they now say it is a far inferiour car to the Porsche is a statement I can believe. No doubt it might be better than the SLK but I don`t personally think it should be an slk beater, should be a Boxter/caymen beater. All IMO of course :)

I say congrats to Porsche for bringing out an updated Caymen (a proper Coupe) the same time as the Boxster with >300bhp, relatvely light weight (same as old Z4`s), LSD`s and all that

If I sat in a car at a dealer, I still don't know how it drives

It is more luxiorous, but no way it doesn't drive great. Cayman is better track car, but overall Z4 wins IMO. Its very sporty in Sport+ mode and is great in corners. But I am not on a race track every day and I don't drift in every corner on a road. And none of those cars are great for a track. For a race track you should buy car like Lotus Exige S or even KTM X-bow, and Cayman / E85 / E89 will feel like you're driving a boat compared to them.

Actually it was outside the dealer on some grass - stationary :driving: :D .Come on man, some things can be predicted. It`s 200kg heavier, top heavy. I`m sure it is a nice drive as are all BMW`s but I personally just think they`ve taken the car in the wrong direction. Porsche Caymen weighs about the same as my Coupe I believe with >300bhp normally aspirated power and decent MPG, the Z4 should be competing with that.
I1m not after a track caar but not after a Z4 barge either - somewhere in between is what I would want and that is what the Porsche provides and the new Z4 doesn`t, but previously did IMO

Oh, I also prefer the rock hard old Z4 MSport Seats over the softly softly new Z4 seats - straight away u get the impression the new car has been softened up even before driving it.

So the Fifth Gear test confirmed my suspicions.

I will test one though and if I find myself eating my words I`ll take a picture of me eating my underwear and post it on this forum

For each Boxster sold 10 SLKs are sold. It's a wise business decision by BMW to target the SLK drivers instead of the Boxster drivers if you are interested in sales. If the new Z4 is 90% of a Boxster in terms of performance
then it's going to be a heckuva car.

Very true about the marketing aspect.

Hi all,

Both my missus and me test driven the SDrive35 and we both love the look and the overall presentation of the car. Anyway, to cut the story short, we booked the car immediately after test driven it. If the Z4 is any closer to the boxster, we will have bought the boxster so maybe we are the group that BMW is targeting as we are looking for something btw SLK and a Boxster.

I used to own a 987 Boxster S so i know what I am talking about and currently my other ride is a 911. We love the new Z4 look/shape + awesome twin turbo engine + 7 speed DCT gearbox and last but not least the M Adaptive Suspension system. :driving:

Cheers!

It seems BMW are planning to bring out a Z2 which will be the spiritual successor to the Z4. See Autocar for the story.

I am with Darren M here.
Of course, the new Z is for sure be a better seller than the old one. However,
I will not be a fan of the new car I am more into sport cars than sporty looking cars. Unfortunately if I would be changing my Z4 the one is not in the shopping list I would go for a boxter or chayman. or even a 1.35 i with all Bmw Motorsport goodies.

Hi Darren

To each his own and u just have to follow what you like.

I am quite happy with the new Z4 performance and handling as it is after test driving it for 3 times over long period of time in different terrian/roads.
Of course not as clincial/sharp as a Cayman S or Boxster S (price point difference and with my spec for Z4, boxster s will cost a lot more in my countries like $100,000 Sing dollars) but good enough for me even if I want will to bring it to track once a while.

With software upgrade using Juicebox 3, I am pretty excited on what new Z4 can do. 8)
