Tyres Drying Out

Bought my Z4 in April this year, have done approx 3k miles since. Car is in today for its service and I have been told the two front tyres require replacement as they have dried out. Quick google suggests this is a thing for cars that do not move, 'a car that sits for a period of years will experience dry rot.' Car is 3 years old next month and has now done 36k miles. Anyone had this before, car is still under its 3 year manufacturer warranty and its years BMW approved used warranty. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I have any recourse?

I don't think there are any warranties that cover tyres. Are the sidewalls cracked? This is usually superficial but depends on depth.
Did you buy the tyres? Even if they do need changing, don't have them done at BMW - plenty of better deals online.

Im guessing the car is on runflats?

A common Runflat issue im afraid, i would change all 4 for some non runflat rubber instead, it shouldnt cost you musch more than just have the frotn two replaced.

Im sure the tyres will still function correctly but its up to you if you want to risk it.

May be a stupid question but what are the signs or symptoms of a dried out tyre .How can you tell ?

Tyre rubber degrades over time. There will be a date code on the side wall of the tyre described here Key thing to remember would be tyres could have sat idle for a while before being fitted to a car - so while a car is 3 years old, the tyres will almost certainly be older...

Tell tale signs as mentioned are cracking of the rubber. It's more common on low mileage cars that live outside (UV). Personally I wouldn't risk it for the cost of a tyre.

Never heard it's more problematic on RFT though :?

If the car has done 36k miles on its original tyres I will be amazed. If the tyres are truly degrading then they must be replacements that were very old to begin with. Check the date codes on the tyres before doing anything else and, if less than 3 years old, get a second opinion on their condition.

I had 6 tyres on the front of my E88.....all Run Flats because of cracking in the channels. 4 were replaced within a year due to the issue and on each occasion Bridgestone did not admit liability or an issue but paid to have them replaced. I was also not the only one who had this issue.

Roll forward to getting the E89 last January. Brand new RFTs all round and by June last year I was already being advised of cracking in the channels. Even though I was doing more miles in the car than usual due to Mikes car being in the garage. My plan was to run the RFTs until they needed replaced due to wear but after the fiasco with the Beidgestone RFTs last time changing to Non RFTs is the only and best option. After changing to Non RFTs, they still look good.

Funnily enough never had any issues with RFT rears with cracking on ANY on my BMs over the years, just the fronts.
