Looking to get a new set of tyres for my 2.2 E85. I don't want to swap the wheels as I like what I have but can I safely put 205 55 16 on the front with 225 50 16 on the rear?

The only 16" E85 wheels I could find seem to be 7Jx16 with an ET of 47.

But the 17s seem to be 8Jx17 and also ET47 that would use 225 tyres, so I wouldn't have thought what you are proposing would be a problem.

If your wheels have a different offset you might want to have a look on here:- https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=205&aspect=55&diameter=17&wheelwidth=7&offset=37&width2=235&aspect2=35&diameter2=19&wheelwidth2=8.5&offset2=20

Since they’re 16” (They come square). I wouldn’t bother with the wider rears. Certainly don’t recall it was a spec in the handbook. Keeping the tyres the same will give you the flexibility to rotate tyres as you wear through them.

17” all come square as well afaik but I‘m sure you can put wider rear tyres if you wanted to. But again I wouldn’t for the sake of tyre rotation.

When I say tyre rotation, good practice is to have more tyre tread on the rear of the Z4. So as you wear through and you need new tyres you can swap them as the pair wear through.

I have to be honest and say I can't see the benefit of tyre rotation when it will likely just leave you needing 4 new tyres at once.

Surely replacing 2 at a time is less strain on the budget. :?

Replacing 2 at a time does cost less but ... there is nothing so good as putting 4 new skins on all at once in terms of performance and security.
I have put 4 Pilot 4s on my Zed 3000 miles ago. It was a fantastic (almost) revelation of dynamics before and after. I have just last week rotated the 4 tires because i measured a small bit of wear on the right rear not seen on the other 3. I will continue to do this as needed by closely measuring tread wear which I suspect will not happen so quickly now that I know hard acceleration is costing me more tread than hard cornering.
Bottom line is I will be happy to give her 4 new skins when needed and on that day I will push her though the corners harder than the last day

Yes you only need to replace 2! I’m not taking about constant rotation so that they all wear down to 2mm at the exact same point.

At some point the front tyres will need new rubber. At this point you put the old tyres (and alloy) onto the front, with new tyres on the rear. Occasionally yes all 4 will need replacing. But happens with staggered tyres too. Maybe you get two sets of rears for every one set of fronts?
