Tyre Size - Going from 255/35 to 245/40 Win :)

Hi All,

Since removing the RFT's from my car many years ago i just switched to tyres of the same size. That was until i decided to go to the ///M rear size which was 255/40 R18 on non RFT's. With this small profile increase, the tyres seemed quieter, were more comfortable and certainly behaved more progressively, albeit at a little more expense. One thing i couldn't get over however is that since my Falken FK452's which were very narrow, other tyres are much fatter and look almost flat!

This time i decided to go for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's on a 245/40/R18. Perfect is all i can say! And the great part is theyre only £99 per tyre!! Thats a massive £27 saving for 10mm thinner tread. Theyre wider and provide more kerb protection than the FK452's on a 255. Heres what they look like:

Its a good move for all who run 255 35 18 / 225 40 18 imo i went to 265 40 18 rears & 215 45 18 fronts on my last Z (E85)
As youve noticed its quieter,more comfortable & if on stock suspension reduces arch gap without need lowering .
 
They look good. I have recently put Michelin PS3's on (255/35) and they look fat compared to the 255/35 Bridgstone Potenza RFT's they replaced. I had to check they were the right size once I seen them fitted.

Do they look skinnier from behind? I like fat tyres, so the thinner tyre would put me off, even though as you said, the eagle f1's are probably wider due to the tolerance on the widths. Falkens are well known for being on the skinny side.
 
I have 452's on mine at present and they do some up narrow. Think I will be going for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's on mine when I need to change next spring (hopefully my current tyres will last till then)
