Tyre pressures

My daughter has just bought a 64 plate Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SRi auto with 215 / 50 R 17 tyres. She has just had it professionally valeted, and as the guy had some time left, he checked the tyre pressures.

I set them to 32 PSI which is the figure on the door post (and the KwikFit web site). The valeter said that figure is only for the original factory tyres and for replacements, you should set them near to the maximum pressure printed on the actual tyres. The max figure on them is 55 PSI, so he inflated them to 44 PSI and told her that was correct.

I am having trouble convincing her that overinflating the tyres that much will result in a much smaller contact area and is dangerous, but she recons he must know what he is talking about and is ignoring me.

So a guy that cleans and polishes cars is an automotive integration expert whose learned knowledge allows him to be authoritative on the subject matter of aftermarket tyres….

I hope when your daughter goes on the next Ryanair flight she asks the airport toilets cleaner if they’ve advised the pilots on the best course of action for the flight..

There must be a video on YouTube that debunks this sort of nonsense. Aftermarket or not, the tyre pressure will be the same (assuming the same size of course)

Fortunately, she has realised that for once I was not talking bo****ks and reverted to sensible pressures.

You must feel relieved!

It's sad when people with no knowledge claim to be experts. :headbang:

Why the hell was a valeter even presuming to check tyre pressures? If he was even half decent as a mechanic he wouldn't have to clean cars for a living.
