Twitchy steering with Meyle bushes and Falken or Goodyear F1

I unfortunately don't have a solution for you but I have exactly the same issue. I had Falkens all round, then had the arb bushes changed for meyle HD and then had the rear tyres changed for eagle F1s and have twitchy steering on the motorway. So I would be very interested if you resolve the problem.

Based on the experience that I have just had, go ahead and change the fronts to Goodyear F1's to match the rears. Good investment of £200 to start enjoying the car!
I replaced my falkens with eagle F1s on the fronts on Friday, to match the rears, so will report back in a day or two after a motorway journey to see if the shaking has gone.

I'm not sure what pressures you guys are running, but I went back to RFT pressures (33/37) and found it better than 32/34 which I had this morning.

I wouldn't put anyone off alignment, far from it, I just think we need more or less toe (need to think which way round) to compensate for the stiffer bushes and softer than RFT tyres. The BMW settings are based on an OE setup - ours differs slightly.

Right, I've just taken it back to the Hunter alignment place. The figures weren't too far out in comparison to what was dialed in, except the offside rear toe - this was out by 10 minutes or so. It was dialled back in for a test drive, and whilst all was good for the first 99% of the drive, I wasn't convinced. The wheel wasn't straight for the last part of the test drive (irrespective of road camber etc). Back on the machine, and the offside rear toe is out a tad again, highlighting the trailing arm bush as the likely culprit. Just as well I've got all the rear bushes sat in my spare room!

After a short motorway journey last night, it would appear that switching from Falkens to Goodyears on the front has cured my wobbly motorway speed steering. I had the balance with the Falkens checked twice so it was definitely the tyres themselves.

So in summary:
F: Falkens + R: Goodyears = :(
F: Goodyear + R: Goodyear = :D

I have the Meyle HD set up with Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2 all round, before this I had the Falken 452s. I find the ride much smooth and less twitchy with the Goodyear tyres.

Andrew.

Really glad that you have been able to resolve your issue - very useful for me too.

Once I've rebushed etc, I'll see where I am and go from there.

There's definitely a problem with wobbly rear toe on mine though.
