TV's and open fires

Carrying on from the fireplace thread.
People with open fires, have you mounted your telly on the wall above the fire?
If so, have you had any problems with the heat and your telly?
 
Remember my picture - the fire has warped the candles which are above it ...

So no - not if you have a "real" fire.
 
Our panel is ultra thin LED and sits a good 10" from the top of the fire surround which itsself has a quite deep mantlepiece. Upon checking numberous time my TV is not warmed considerably by the fire.

Now the one in the kitchen is a LCD panel on what now seems an industrial sized mount ( we can alter the viewing nagle though so suits the kitchen )....Now if this was avove the fire I am sure it would get very hot.

So really you have to be sensible and plan these things properly, HINT bury all cables in the wall!!!!!!
 
Surely there is an optimum height for correctly viewing a television and it is hardly with the bottom of the screen at least five foot off the floor! :?

This behaviour of mounting (picture like) TV's above the fireplace dates back to when flat screen / HD TV's first hit the marketplace - for some reason people still follow this early trend

I believe that the optimum height is when you are watching the TV, your eyeline is 1/3 of the screen height up from bottom of the screen.

I thought it was 1/3 from the TOP. I'm not seriously into home theatre, so I could be wrong.

No, it's perfect, because I always slouch deeply into the sofa. :P

Seriously though, it is a terrible location besides the heat issue. Especially for LCD screens, who's contrast falls off sharply with any significant change in vertical viewing angle. It seems the acceptable horizontal viewing angle continues to improve for this technology, as it is a legitimate usability issue. For some reason the corresponding vertical angles don't seem to improve much.
 
I wouldn't put our plasma above a fire, if we had a fire - quite apart from the viewing angle it gets really, really hot anyway.
 
The guy who put up some tvs for us said you increase the rate of component failure and the height is far too high - he also commented that as tv sizes increase people tend not to lower them which should be the case to centre the screen at a comfortable viewing height when sat on a sofa.
 
The perfect height for a TV is when the top of it is level with your eye line ( a bit like a PC monitor). So it does make me laugh when you see these changing room(esq) type programs where they stick the TV up on the chimney!

Exactly that's why the glass top three shelf tv stands are designed in that manner.

As the size of somewhat affordable panels keeps growing, pretty soon we'll just be setting them on the floor to meet that criteria! :roll:

Producers of such programs see TVs as just another decorator item, they apparently don't expect people to seriously watch these things. Unfortunately, it causes people with little common sense to believe this is a good way arrange their room.

Apologies to people that actually do this, I know sometimes it is the best of the only bad alternatives available for a situation, but you have to admit it is a bad alternative.
