Tuning a 2.0?? lots of questions

Ive read a few posts and am getting the genral feeling that the 2.0 engine is already running at its best, has anyone actually tried to get a bit more out of it?

Also ive read about K&N panel filters letting a bit too much grit through and in to the engine? has anyone done some extensive research?

The newer 2.0s are 168bhp i think is this just a re-map?

Alot of question i know but i seem to be getting conflicting reports on the searches im doing, mines a 2005 by the way.

Cheers Mark

For the gains you'd get for the money you'd need to spend you're going to be a lot better of trading up IMO... you'll probably pick up some extra toys at the same time. Failing that I'd leave the engine and concentrate on a brake and suspension upgrades - I can't see you making any significant gains in straight line speed so you may as well concentrate on point to point improvements with later braking and faster cornering.

Reference the filter, have a look at www.shipkiller.com (he's a tech mod on here - knows his stuff!) The only reason I can see for fiddling with the induction is to get a better noise :)

BTW... as your after advice you may want to drop by the Newbie forum and say hi :poke: (Pictures help no end!)

IMO it's not really worth it dude...

Nothing to do with the old "you've got a little 2.0 and i've got a 3.0" I wouldn't bother extensively tuning my 3.0SE either .Best way forward is a supercharger kit for me :( Or sell and get a M ..

Just go for Non RF tyres ..Check all your bushs...Alignement..Maybe nice zorst for sound.Stuff like that is much more worthwhile that 3-6BHP you'd prob get

As above. As the great Carroll Hall Shelby once said "There is no substitute for cubic capacity".

That's not to say mine's bigger than your's but in this case big is best.

Welcome and happy Z'ing

Ain't that true - watched a programme that had a pre war Fiat racecar with a 14 litre 4 cylinder engine. 3.5 ltr per cylinder

Bottom line for the 2.0 Zed - forget trying to eek power out of it unless you have real big money to spend. BMW are very good at getting it about right to start with in terms of induction, engine, mapping, etc.

I have a 2.0i and it is what it is. If you want more power then go for a 2.5/3.0

And as far as "there's no replacement for displacement".... 2 words..... forced induction :D

thanks for the advice, i cant justify a 3.0 as im only doing 2000 miles a year in it. Im thinking of a K&N panel to give it a bit more induction noise has anybody tried one? i had one on my astra VXr but wasnt too impressed, recently ive read they arnt good for the engine

I have one and it's coming out at the next service interval. Makes no difference to induction noise or power (not that I expected it to)

Save that money too.

SNAP - just had a service and replaced the Kand N with OEM BMW - no difference in either induction noise or performance (that I can notice...!)

I had initially thought of tuning the engine of my 2.0 but to be honest I'm pretty happy with it as it is at the moment. Think I'd rather spend my money/time working on the appearance and functionality of the car. My next plan is to change the headunit for a bluetooth/ipod compatible one and then crack on with the MFSW and cruise control mods.

Wise move... you'll be amazed how much faster / tighter the car "seems" with the M Steering Wheel :driving:

I know - I test drove one prior to buying my car and really loved it. Was the only thing lacking from my car really when I bought it. Need to wait a couple of months though - been spending a bit too much in the last month between the car and camera!

I have a 2.0i SE on an 06 plate, I don't think it's worth the cash or the hassle to start trying to get any more power out of it!
Do any of you know what BHP my car was kicking out when new??
Cheers chaps and chapettes

Same here! I went back to OEM when it was serviced. There's no difference whatsoever.

It would of been 147bhp.

Some BMW's really dont like induction kits, it messed with my mates E30 325 M Sport when he fitted one aswell. The only car ive owned where its made a difference is my mk1 mr2 which has a k&n fitted right on the TB. It opened up the car top end and gave it more torque lower down, plus is sounds great with it right behind your head :driving:

To echo the sentiments already here, if you want a faster car the best way to go about it is to buy a faster car :?
