HI Everyone. Just got my first Z4. Only had it a week and totally loving it. First post on the Forum too! :|

Had a couple of journeys and just thought I'd check the oil and water before its longest run to date, only about 150 miles. I noticed the water was very low so I topped it right up so the float was just bobbing. Journey went really well despite queuing several time on the M25 heading for Junc 13. Couple of short 15 mile journeys later, the coolant light came on for a while and went off again. When I got home I checked the coolant level again and the float was down and I couldn't see water in the expansion bottle. Just a point to note, the temperature gauge has remained in the min, normal position when running or idling. So reading on this great source of knowledge, Z4-Forum, I'm thinking I have a cracked expansion tank. Don't fancy the job myself so I want to take it to a dealer or indi in the Essex area that you guys could recommend. I'm about 20 mins east of Stansted airport. I'm thinking Bishops Stortford, Chelmsford, Colchester, Halsted may be. Any suggestions would be great.

Power Developments bmw in Basildon are great, but maybe a bit of a journey for you?

I had a cracked expansion tank on mine. My dad did it. Pretty basic diy stuff, but is quite time consuming. Took us the best part of a day to get it all sorted.
 
Another common fault is that the pressure seal on the cap has given up, or you've not done it up tightly enough. It is a pressure release cap, so needs to be done up properly.

GSF car parts (there's one in lakeside) will sell a new cap so that's an easy and cheap option to try.
 
Didn't know there was a gsf in lakeside. Where abouts?

I always end up having to drive to eurocarparts in Romford which is a pain.
 
I've just got mine back from from Darjac in Halstead (works from the same site as Grimaldi Engineering - CO9 2SZ) - 07807 689538 / 01787 223644.

It's not an unbiased opinion of course, and he's now also my mate after looking after my ///Ms for about 10 years (other than for warranty & scheduled servicing for the warranty).

Just had it there for my pre-Ring inspection/preparation, which included fitting RS14 pads (he persuaded me to try them over my normal EBC Bluestuff NDX), clutch slave cylinder replacement, flush of brake fluid and refill with ATE SuperBlue (IIRC), alignment, oil/filter change, air filter change, etc.

He also took the opportunity to get a template made for a bracket to fit some Ferrari Alcon calipers for me :thumbsup:

If you tell him Tony/mmm-five recommended me, he'll buy me dinner next time I see him :P
 
Thanks for all the advice people, very helpful. I have just emailed Darjac as they are either away or busy and not able to answer the phone. in fairness, it does say that on their website. I'll make sure I mention you Tony mmm-five! Don't think its the cap RJS-Z4 but I do agree it a cheap thing to try first.

I left him this morning at about 9:30 and he was off to Dartford for something.

He's usually quite busy, but is always moaning to me about having to work 8am-8pm, weekends, bank holidays, etc. :P

If he's busy, or doing something intricate, then he'll ignore the phone.

That makes sense. Nothing worse than customers pestering you when you are trying to get a job done! hehehe.
