Trunk SLAMS! Bad strut?

Suddenly, the trunk lid on my (2005) Z4 slams shut. One of the gas-filled pneumatic things -- struts? -- is probably bad.

1. How do I know which one?

2. Any experience? Recommended source? I don't know the part number...

I assume it's an easy replacement job, nothing tricky.

You can find part numbers at

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/

I've found pretty good prices at ecstuning.com
or check out car-part.com for used parts

As far as figuring out which one the best way I would guess to do it is to disconnect them and check for resistance... if its slamming down my guess would be that they are both worn pretty bad

Here's a DYI on them

They're really easy to change all you need is a thin flat screwdriver. Pop out the metal clip at each end and they pop off.

No worries man, everyone here has helped a bunch as a newbe, just wanted to help someone else... I was stoked when someone showed me the realoem site too. Just a heads up sometimes the drawings aren't so clear but if you copy the part # then use it to search the ECSTuning site most of the time they show a picture of the part, makes it a lot clearer.

Also a buddy of mine owns a salvage yard and that Car-Part.com site is what junk yards use to locate parts they don't have for people.
