If it's your first driving trip to the uk then you will want to see the best driving roads. Much as it pains me to say it, they are mainly in Scotland.

The weather in April could be wet though.

5 days is not that long, as it's a full days drive from the South East Ferry ports to get there. So worth considering the ferry up to Tyneside or Hull.

Much as I love North Wales, The Lake District & especialy Cornwall, where I live, Scotland is a better place to enjoy a driving holiday. Good luck with your planning.

Definately the DFDS crossing to the Tyne if you want Scotland or the Lake District.
As I said in a previous post, Hull is a 150 mile drive to the Port of Tyne.
From the port there are good roads to travel in each direction. The ship docks about 09.00 and you could be in the Lakes or the Borders by mid morning!

If you're visiting the South and across to the South West, take the tunnel. The Hook of Holland to Felixstowe ferry was good also when I bought a car in Eindhoven.

I've been looking more into detail to all different options and whilst Scotland would be great, it just takes to long to get there, taking into account we can only stay for 4 days... So at best we will either take the ferry from Dunkerque to Dover or maybe just visit north France. Not too sure yet...
