Transmission - Fix now or let it fail?

Hey all

My 2.5i has been making a low rumble or what I call a "grumbling" sound at low speed, high gear changes. When I'm driving the car moderately, esp on an incline, it makes a rubbing or grumbling sound as it switches from 4th to 5th. I did a road test with my mechanic and he said it's definitely the transmission. He suggested driving it until it fails which could be awhile. My thinking is that it's not as enjoyable to drive the car like this and I'm willing to spend some money so it's driving optimally. I'd like to get some advice from you guys before I make a decision, though.

First, to fix this problem, does the transmission need to be replaced or can it be repaired/refurbished, etc? What's the BEST thing to do?

Do you think I should drive it until if fails? Are there downsides to this approach in terms of damage and/or cost to fix it?

My general state of thinking is that I'm not getting any younger and every day that it's not running optimally is a lost day of enjoying the car.... plus I worry that I'll get stranded somewhere when I really need to be somewhere (although I do have AAA).

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks a bunch!!!
