Transfer Reg Plate online

Put my personal plate back on my zed today - did intend to sell it a few months ago but my heart was never really in it and I got mucked about by time wasters and tyre kickers that just endorsed my decision to keep it.

Anyway the point of this thread is to say how easy it is to complete the whole process online - it took all of 2 minutes :D just entered details of current number and number of retention certificate followed by confirmation that transfer is complete and you can put new plates on immediately.

Bonus in my case was it was free to change on insurance ( again :rofl: ) car looks so much better with an ageless plate :D
 
can you put the plates on straight away or do you need confirmation or log book updating?
 
Straightaway - they state they will send you a new V5 and ask that you destroy the old one - the confirmation actually tells you to put the new plates on immediately.
 
When I took mine off my last car it would't let me do it on-line, said there had been an error or something. Didn't even bother trying when I put it on the Z but sounds like I should have done, planning on keeping my Z for a while but will remember this if I ever decide to change
 
The DVLA seem to be getting their act together.You can keep the number for 10 years now,so no annual renewal.
 
Transferring mine from my old car to my Zed a couple of months ago was a right chore. Took the best part of a month for all the documentation to work it's way through the system.

Tried to transfer mine this morning but it wouldn't allow me to, rang the helpline and was told that if the vehicle you are putting the plate on has been untaxed for a lengthy period (didn't know exactly) such as on a garage forecourt within the last 5 yrs then it can't be done online.
Usual DVLA muddled thinking on this one
 
I'd heard of this service but never used it - I did the post and wait, took 2 weeks. Good to know for the future :)

That actually annoyed me as I am not a number plate hoarder I have one and want it on my car, so instead of £25 to change it over they charge me £80. Its obviously much better for the plate hoarders so they don't have to pay £25 per year but to me seemed like a way of getting more money out of the normal folk
 
i've just ordered a new plate on the dvla site for a friend

i can't see how to do the transfer on line, any pointers?

tried it and it says the service is only available 8am till 6pm, they must shut down all the computer when they go home lol

They do, the cleaner need the plug socket for her Hoover.

Yeah - A website with opening hours.

Only the UK Government could come up with such pish :rofl:
