Traffic lights

Many of the local traffic lights near me have all been reprogrammed so that only one side gets green at any time, unlike in the past where 2 sets of facing traffic got green. This has resulted in huge queues and tailbacks with the town centre gridlocked for large amounts of time, most motorists pissed off with it. Have they done this in other parts of the country.

i often wonder that. traffic around here used to flow well and all of a sudden its mental at 5pm. at first i wondered if there was road closed somewhere so people were diverting but its been like it for a month or so now.

probably not related - but they did something similar on quite a few roads in central London 6 months before the CC was implemented, then changed back once the CC started - so giving the illusion the CC was giving better traffic flow

probably, it only seems to take one set of light to be changed and the lot screws up

They are forever changing the lights, roads etc in Edinburgh and this was happening long before the tram works. The worst thing with Edinburgh if you've never been is George Street where there is a round about at every cross roads but just off each of these roundabouts are zebra crossings and sometimes you can sit for long periods of time before it's clear or some pedestrian (like myself) who's clearly a driver on that road stops and signals to you to go through. I like to do that as it drives me mental as a driver.

Whoever thought of that needs shot......I assume it's the same tool who decided to install rising bollards only to remove them the following week!!!

Split phasing the opposing traffic movements is often done at junctions where there is a heavy right turn or history of collisions on a gap accepting opposed right turn.

It is a bit of a blunt tool as it is very inefficient and usually there are smarter but more expensive alternatives which require physical modifications to to junction layout as opposed to a cheap EEPROM.

thats the most frustrating thing. with thought it could be done much better for everyone but the money isnt there to do so. instead we all muddle through. I cant remember the name of it but there is a town in cheshire that did a radical thing to its town centre that had a major A road through it. it seemed madness but it worked apparently

this is it... im not sure it would work for everywhere but it may do. there is a huge junction on the main road into liverpool though speke by the ford garage and airport, 2 or 3 lanes each way and then dedicated turning lanes as well. often when the lights were out it flowed quicker than when they were on!

Looks like there is a new traffic and pollution management system being rolled out in Swansea, assuming you are where your profile says you are, that might be it. Testing the new system maybe? I'd be tempted to email the local council asking about it and relating your experience, it can't hurt.

that's an interesting idea. cant see it working tbh in some cases where there isnt really an alternative road but interesting all the same. they mentioned taking out speed bumps and removing busses and stuff. i often wondered about these. i know i piss people off in the z, liverpool is festooned with the sodding things and i go over them slowly but as i am fed up with impatient people forcing their way past i position myself quite aggressively so they cant.
