I'm wanting to get new wheels and tyres for my UK 2010 35is but struggling to understand if I need new TMPS senors (I have searched the forum!).
The current wheels are aftermarket but do have metal stems, however the iDrive system says "Flat Tyre Monitor active".

Just as a sanity check... I think this means I don't actually have any sensors in my wheels and I could even just fit non-runtflats if I wanted to and wouldn't need to recode anything?
 
I would say you are correct, I don’t think the active pressure monitoring was added until 2013/-2014 model’s
 
The car does not use TPMS modules inside the tyres it uses the ABS system to detect a puncture/low pressure.
This works by way of the reset you need to do when you inflate your tyres, its done via idrive on mine, no idea how if you dont have idrive.
This sets the system and if you get a leak that wheel rotation speed wills start to differ, ABS detects that and tells you.

Depends on the year.
The earlier ones used the ABS system, same as the E85s.
The later ones then swapped to using the sensors. Mine is a 64-plate and has the sensors fitted.
