Torque Wrench - which one?

Hi All,

So I’m hoping some of you can help me out. I bought a torque wrench today so that when servicing the beast I can make sure all nuts ‘n’ bolts have the correct torque settings. On some of my old cars I’ve just guestimated but I want to give the Zed a little more love and affection.

I wanted a 1/2” wrench so that fits all of my current socket sets however I think the one I’ve bought has a range that’s too high for most applications.

This is what I bought as it had some good reviews for the price.

My question is, is there a better wrench I could buy that has a wider torque range (I can’t find any) and/or do you think I should just get another wrench to deal with the lower torque stuff?

I look forward to hearing your answers.

Bergen do a 0 to 25 mm this is a 1/4 drive,Draper in a 3/8 drive does 10 to 80 nm both are priced similar to what you paid.
Just do a Google search ,the above came up on eBay .Free pp

I got a similar looking Draper one from Amazon for £15, 28-210 Nm. At these prices if I need anything else I'll just get another that fits.

Thanks chaps. I did see the draper one after buying the screwfix one. Think I'll take it back tomorrow as the draper looks better suited.

Google searched for most accurate torque wrenches and Halfrauds came up tops, paid about £80 for it, 40-225 lbs 1/2 inch drive nice piece of kit. Will get smaller one soon Cheers Baz

Code 22733: 3/8" drive, 20-110Nm.

Isnt 25nm the most common torque for things like spark plugs / sump plug

Plenty of heavy nuts plus wheel nuts at around 75 ft lbs , calliper bracket bolts 80 + ft lbs not good on a 3/8" drive. Baz

Halfords!! It's professional quality and guaranteed for life. I took one back after 12 years thinking it had lost accuracy and they swapped it without question. Also, if you find somebody with a trade card it's very good value.
:D

25nm is too much for plugs and sump surely??

I have two for the different ranges as I think the precision suffers when the range is too big.

So speaking of torque wrenches etc, does anyone have a guide for all the torque settings for the Zed? Can't seent to find one.

I have a Teng Tools one with a 1/2" drive which I paid £30 for in Jersey although they are about £50 over here. Easy to use, well built and comes in a nice case to keep it protected.

Iv had it 3/4 years and it still looks new :)

Spot on.

With torque wrenches, smaller range is better. Yes, you have to buy more than one and have different sockets (or use adaptors), but if you want accuracy, which is vital at lower torque settings, then there is no one size fits all.

I have three torque wrenches
1/4" 5 to 20Nm
1/2" 25 to 150Nm
1/2" 40 to 225Nm

Halfords, Draper, Sealey are all good.

No. (have you any idea how much paper that would be?!? :o )
But there are online versions.

But the dvd works best (you can download it in some pirated parts of the interwebs  ).
The dvd works only on winXP out of the box. For win7/8 you need a workaround with some registerkeys etc.

Think my laptop is so old it still runs xp. I can search bit torrent for it but what do I search for?

BMW TIS

Get the 12/2007.
I think the 3/2008 is in german.

If you're interested I have the reg files to install under win7/8
http://audio.home.xs4all.nl/zooi/z4/div/tis/tis.rar
What you have to do is make an install on winxp (full install to hdd), and copy the complete bmw95 folder to the win7/8 machine.
Then add the 2 regfiles to the registry. But prior to that confirm the paths of the installed and destinated folder (so install on C, D etc) and check the version of the dvd.
So you have to edit the registry files.
These files are from an install from F to D and for dvd version 12/2007

ok after seeing people washing there cars and taking their wheels off to give them a better clean (and access brakes etc.) ive decided i now need my own Torque Wrench at home so i can have a tinker myself rather than running to the garage whenever i need wheels off.

has anybody bought 1 recently and have a link to a well priced Torque Wrench?

any feed back from the 1 purchased from the OP? http://www.screwfix.com/p/reversible-torque-wrench/18289
