Torque sensor weirdness!

Hi all, i have a bit of a weird thing happening with my steering, i have read the many posts about this but here is my strange predicament.

It started when i went to reverse park (i know this has happened to a few posters here) and once you hit the full lock the yellow steering wheel with exclamation mark appears and all EPS is lost, after re starting it is back to normal however, if i give it some revs it does not happen!

The next time it happened i was at traffic lights, honked my horn hard a couple of times at a friend. Looked down and the same thing as above, no EPS, light on etc.

Then, partially removed the drivers seat, (was doing the airbag light repair as earlier posted) and wedged it into the s/wheel. Next time i drive her the same as above. I know it has something to do with the torque sensor because it throws a fault. But surely if the sensor/steering column needs replacing why does this happen only rarely and only when i have knocked or hit the steering wheel?

Could somebody advise me if the Angle Sensor and the Torque Sensor are at all connected because im thinking that if the angle sensor which i believe is at top of the column takes the strain of the above actions, would it then communicate with the t/sensor thus throwing a fault and loss of EPS. I know from all the post i have read that it is to do with power not getting there or too much. But 98% of the time everything is fine, it wont happen for months then because of the above it will...well.....just happen! :(

After a restart, the problem goes away and doesn't return until something similar as above happens!

Big thanks for reading. Oh, its an E85 Z4 2.0i if it helps.

The torque sensor is at the lower end of the upper section of the steering column

I have a spare which you are welcome to for the cost of postage

but its quite a big job to fit, the steering column has to be removed and a pin MUST be fitted, got the pin as well

It would then need coding to the car

Big thanks for the brilliantly detailed reply nfarmer i appreciate your time.

I don't think i am capable of a job like this, it just looks too intense for me. But i do appreciate your kind offer thankyou.

i can live with it as it only ever happens when the steering wheel is knocked and such like. It just seems strange, as if there is something not quite connected inside the wheel/column to cause the light and loss of EPS although only temporary.

Great pictures nfarmer.
How long roughly did it take you to get the steering column out??
Do you have any more 'tips' on column removal??

The work was done by the local dealer when they fitted a new (horribly expensive) steering column to finally resolve the steering issues. I believe it took about four hours to change the column but that dosent including the re-coding.

It's not a job for the faint hearted.

I have more photos taken while I stripped the old column and I wil post them in due course

I dont think the upper sensor is a torque sensor, I think this is angle sensor.
That is a sensor that is used for esp etc.

In your photobucket there is also the following pic:

Isn't this the torque sensor?

I presume you had sticky steering?
Did the grease nipple trick work or not? (I can see you fitted the nipple)

Yes your exactly correct I must have had my brain switched off when I wrote earlier, I should have double checked!!

Yep I had suffered from sticky steering and the grease nipple worked to a degree. It's difficult to explain but the original sticky steering was sort of cured but there was still a nasty underling drag on the steering. The local dealer thought it was the U/Js on the lower column (but that had been replaced) and not until that was disconnected and the car was on the hoist wheel free did they accept the faulty was in the upper column. I have now almost completely dismantled the upper column (and have proven to my satisfaction that the torque sensor cant be removed) in an attempt to identify the actual problem area. All the bearings except one are quite rough when tested, but they have done 120K miles however I think my main problem COULD have been easily improved for a very low cost. But let me explain in a separate thread probably tomorrow.

nfarmer, i am waiting for your troubleshooting/results. I am sure there is quite a few people who wants to know if there is some way to diy fix eps/steering column problems.

Hmmm seen this comment in the steering column replacement instructions in TIS

Can you get fault codes read should show whats happening
