Top up the oil level

Hello,

my oil light came on while standing on a hill today so I have to fill up the oil level a bit. The thing is that we have national holiday here in CZ and BMW dealer will be closed for quite a while. What are the specifications for the standard BMW oil the dealer uses? Can oil brands be mixed if the specifications of the oils are respected?

Check your manual, or a good supplier can tell what oil by the reg number of your car (Halfords did for me). It was £16 a litre though!

Do you mean the oil warning light or the computer that tells you (I think later models have this). I'd be VERY worried if it was the oil warning light as that usually means barely any oil is left!! That really is NOT good!!

mine only takes about 0.5 litres when the oil light comes on yellow...

what about a 2.5? I was looking at the oils at the OMV gas station where they offered me the OMV Bixxol. The bottle said the oil is longlife and made for BMW engines but it was 5w30 I think...

manual is no help at all on what grade for any engine just says phone your dealer! it does say that small amounts of other synthetic oils can be used between oil changes though

It came on after spirited driving and going down from a very steep hill. I left it for about 4 hours and when I started up it didnt shine anymore (yellow). Checked the oil level today and the level was approximately in the middle of that middle ractangle thing on the measuring stick. I don´t thing its completly empty but for the good feeling I would rather top it up...

Level should be checked when the engine is warm - about 5 minutes after switch off...
