Top of 2nd gear speed?

What speed does the top of 2nd gear reach? Want to know if a 0-60mph (0-100kph/62mph) requires dropping the car into 3rd or not. Stemming along that, does 100mph/160kph require 4th gear?
 
Not sure exactly which Z4 you are talking about, but assuming not an M and assuming the same gearing as an e46.... my 330Ci e46 would do about 30 in first and about 60 in second. 90 in third, so 100 needed fourth I *think*.

The "M" revs a little bit more and does a few more mph per gear too.

Dropping 0-60 times in cars seem to be mostly coming from gearbox improvements as far as I can see it, rather than cars necessarily being "quicker" (which is often traction-limited for the highest end models)
 
Are you talking 'speedo' speeds or actual speeds?

My M speed shows (approx.):
  1. 40mph
  2. 70mph
  3. 105mph
  4. 135mph
  5. 170mph

GPS shows it's more like:
  1. 35mph
  2. 65mph
  3. 100mph
  4. 130mph
  5. 165mph

According to this the top speed of a Z4 M is as follows, this is based on an 8K rev line and assuming you have enough road and are using standard 255/40/18 rear tyres. Expect there are a lot of other factors you need to take into account though such as wind resistance, engine health etc as to whether your motor will actually do these numbers. Seems about right though.

1st = 38
2nd = 67
3rd = 101
4th = 137
5th = 168
6th = 198
Rev = 42

Here's the numbers I got which is good news, no 3rd gear needed for 60 but 100 needs 4th

1st 36 mph
2nd 63 mph
3rd 94 mph
4th 128 mph
5th 157 mph
6th 185 mph

Do you seriously think your car is capable of 198mph if there were no limiters on the engine?

I was merely showing the potential given the math behind it. I even put a caveat in about other factors affecting this like wind speed. I don't expect a ZM would get much past 175mph given a long enough road. :poke:
 
Do it in a 30 zone next to a speed camera, would make for a cracking picture and possibly worth the points and fine if they could make it stick :lol:
 
As I expected then 6th in the M is a cruising gear as with the 330, the original pre-facelift E46 had five speeds only and I believe they are the same ratios - it is just missing the longer/taller gear
 
I'm off out tonight to see if I can do 40 in reverse...

of course, all these speeds in 3rd, 4th and 5th are theoretical - or attempted on UK private land :wink:
