Top HiFi Amplifer / Carver

My radio wasnt working when i bought it. When i turn on the radio, it just makes a popping sound, kind of like its turning on and off.

Ive figured out that i have the Top HiFi by checking the amp and the subwoofer impedance.

I was looking at the HiFi/Top HiFi amplifier operation and it said the amplifier turns on when it receives a input signal (12V) from the radio that is greater than the continuous supply voltage (9V).
I think its referring to the Aerial Diversity as the input. So i checked them and got (connector on the amp, X10266):
Aerial Diversity Amp PIN #10 = 11.4 V
Continuous Supply PIN #5 = 12.4 V
Ground PIN #26

If this is correct, the input signal is too low and the continous supply is too high. The amplifier would never be able to turn on. Can someone else confirm?

or Could i just have a blown amplifier?
 
Quite possible you have a blown amp. When I bought mine the amp was fried.
These cars are notorious for water leaking into the trunk(boot) and collecting in the battery box as you know that is where the amp is also
Once you get things sorted drill 4 holes in the bottom of the battery tray to allow any water that collects to drain out.
 
Check to make sure that the amp in the boot (trunk) isn't sat in water.

(Edit, someone beat me to it re checking for water)
 
What year is your ZED?

They changed the Hi-Fi Pro DSP Carver system when they facelifted the cars in 03/2006.

My 2007 build car has it's Carver amp mounted on the bulkhead.
 
Ive got '03, 3.0i

Ive already pulled out the amp from the car. The battery was randomly draining so i took it out. There was no water there. It was hard to tell if to took any water damage from the previous owner.

I will try to open the amp and see if anything looks wrong.

Sounds like a good plan.

Have you got INPA diag software? Could be worth having a go with this to see what is going on. INPA can talk to the radio and the carver amp.

Not sure what that is. I was looking for some diagnostic software and hardware, but i wasn't able to find anything when i browsed the forum.

I am away for a couple of days. When I am back on Tuesday, I will connect it up to my Z and post up some screen shots of INPA in the RADIO and DSP amp diagnosis screens.

Contained 4 posts up :roll: , it connects to the OBD port in the car, by the boot (trunk) release.

As TonyP has said it is called INPA.

It is a BMW software suite which allows you to read and clear diagnostic codes, read live status data, activate functions / actuators, etc.

You need the correct cable and can then plug the cable in and run the software on a PC.
