Good day folks! My friends and I are looking to do a cheap car road trip for our 40th. We've all known each other since middle school and have migrated all over the US. I'm in Northern California, some of us from SoCal, Midwest and east coast. The start will be in Atlanta, through tail of dragon, nashville and end in Detroit. Our budget for the car is $3k and you can spend $1.5k to fix and spend on the trip. They're all very mechanically inclined and getting old cars with big v8s. I. however, use chatgpt for any issues I come across.
Anyways, I'm looking at a 03 z4 3.0 with SMG. Looks pretty clean and has 160k miles. No service records and the top doesnt work, but can be moved manually. Seller listed for 3.5k but at one point he reduced it to 3k on facebook marketplace. He said he bought it a year ago, put 200 miles in it and left in garage cause the top stopped working. Any advice on what to look for? Is the SMG transmission good? Would it be wise for a drive from Sacramento, to Atlanta, to Detroit and back to Sacramento? Or should I ship it there an back?
