Top Gear ///M review on now - Dave

I think this made me realise after about a year i'd be bored of a boxster...

Much better is the fezza scuderia thats on 5th gear atm....

Thanks Stuart - I love seeing this every once in a while.

i'm fortunate enough to have had both now, i bought a 987S boxster in 06 the 3.2 one. I thought the handling was nice and precise on the test drive, and it sounded reasonable and had reasonable go (280bhp i think it was). my reason for looking was i wanted to change from running 2 cars which at the time were an Alfa 147 and an Elise 111R, so thought the boxster was the compromise, i sold both of them to get the porsche. Now i've got the ///M i can honestly say the boxster isnt a patch on it for driver enjoyment. sure it handles more precisely, but it doesnt provide anywhere near as much sense of occasion when you drive it...

Interesting. How does the 111R compare to the Z?

chalk and cheese, I've had 5 elise/exige cars. the elise generally is scalpel like compared to either boxster or the ///M, it really feels light, corners flat, and gives so much feedback through the steering and the seat of your pants that neither the ///M or the boxster can offer. it rides quite hard though, and is more of a circuit type car than the ///M or Boxster which are much better allround cars. you can really tell the performance through lightweight ethos though if you've never driven a lightweight car before.

The problem with elises is that even though they are light, they are underpowered and sound like sewing machines by comparison. The boxster is kind of a half way house between the elise and the ///M the boxster still has clinical feel to its handling and some more grunt to go with it, but its just too middle of the road for me, it never really excites like the ///M or the elise, it doesnt handle like an elise, and it doesnt have the engine of the ///M. The elise you could carry unbelievable speed into and out of the bends, the balance is sublime. The boxster was similar only you never really felt excited by it, or at least i didnt, cant quite place why that was. Moving onto the ///M its basically an engine with a car attached. the engine dominates the experience IMO, it sounds so good and pulls so well. the handling and balance takes much more learning, but isnt nearly as well balanced as the Elise, i think that is part of the cars charm, you have to really learn to drive it, and when you start to do so its great fun. Coming out of the bends with a little dab of power oversteer is so much fun.... and thats what the cars about for me, FUN.... its got bags of character and i wouldnt go back to the elise or a 986 or 987 boxster now. I've not driven a 981 boxster, but they look great from the reviews i've read, maybe that will be the next car after the ///M.

you got a good un too :)

i was convinced there wouldnt be any lower mileage than mine which on 12588 when i bought it. I'm still fascinated by who owned yours before that only has done 6k in it! its a total waste of a car isnt it? all the better for you though, a practically new ///M!

The guy had at least 3 good cars, this one, a Z8 and an M5. All similar mileage. When the paperwork comes through I might try and make contact, just to see if there was anything done to the car...

good idea, i would try and seek him out too. Sounds like he isnt short of a few £££ then, and a bit of a BMW fan! i like knowing the history of my cars..... still havent ventured out in the wet in mine. Kev said mine had never seen a wet road, which when the underside is as clean as the top side you can believe.

I think its inevitable it'll discover some wet roads and rain in my stewardship as it will be visiting the lake district regularly, where we only have outdoor parking....i actually want to drive the thing, which in this country means accepting the weather doesnt it! i will just avoid driving it on gritted/salty roads as they are the ones that affect the underside arent they.

#69 passed her MOT no advisories on Saturday. The tester is a hard core Petrolhead and was happy for me to poke around under the car with him whilst it was up on the ramp. It was the same guy who tested her last year. I'm amazed how well they hold up to the crappy roads. Although whenever I washed her I jetwashed underneath and that's clearly paid off
