Top 20 new cars cheaper than used

Interesting…

"Logic suggests that a used car should cost less to run than a brand new one. By driving it off the forecourt a new car takes an instant hit in depreciation; with a one-year old car someone else will have taken that hit, so the second owner’s costs should be less.

Not so, according to data experts CAP Automotive. The number crunchers there have, apparently, discovered that some brand new cars cost less to run over three years than year-old ones!

The firm’s Total Cost of Ownership measurement takes into account all running costs, including depreciation, fuel, servicing and other maintenance costs. It has used this to compare every brand new car on sale in the UK with their year-old equivalents – and it has exclusively shared the data with MSN Cars."

Its not 100% clear why, neither does it take into account desirability of cars with specification, most are 4x4s.

After the 3 year period may be cheaper sounds a little fishy.

This also assumes you would sell after three years and you would get for it the figure they have quoted in the depreciation.

Pinch of salt springs to mind.

this is something that i hear quite often amongst people i know. its a little different but basically they are saying that they get better APR on a new car than a nearly new a the dealers and can take one of those service plans which seem to be good value sometimes.

its all irrelevant for me as i'm not in a position to get a new car but hey ho.

Its is BS, also the argument about servicing. Why would a 3 year old car cost more in servicing than a brand new car the service intervals are the same… the services cost the same too unless they get s 3-5 year deal for servicing with a new car. Maybe that something is more likely to go wrong. If someone is clued up in any way shape or form they make sure the car is in need of nothing for 2 years when they buy it from the dealer anyway making sure any service needed soon is done same with tyres etc… basic stuff.

Also the toys on the vehicle make a small difference in price when buying a used car yet in a brand new car you pay full for them when you will never see that back… Think the way they have worked it out is flawed. If your buying a basic standard car straight from the dealer then maybe that will work out but most people wouldn't.

An interesting but essentially flawed article, no doubt based on a set of criteria that probably very rarely exist in the real world.

It's also misleading when there are examples where they compare a run out model vs the new (eg the Range Rover Sport).

It seems that the key driver of their argument are the running costs post year 3 (particularly on 4x4s, which probably explains why used petrol Porsche Cayennes are so cheap)

Until I win the lottery, I'll stick with used

Hmm, to me it smacks of research carried out by manufacturers to try and improve sales of new cars. Or am I just a cynic?

That was similar to us when we were looking at TT`s we had originally gone to the dealer for a used one but it did work out better to buy a brand new one instead which we did, but now with experience it will be the one & only brand new car we buy now.

Paid £41k for it in july 2012 & the problem is its now done 45k miles so I tried webuyanycar for a quote & that come back at £19k...the depreciation has made us both want to cry! needless to say we will be steering clear of new cars in the future for sure.

As a large 4x4 owner there is some truth in this article but you need to go really through the figures- consumable costs on big 4X4s and warranty costs are high , if you can buy new with a discount you can sometimes end up cheaper in the long run over a 3-4,year buying cycle. An annual service on a non service packed RR can be 600 quid.

Some mates of mine running around in Disco 3s with high mileage pick up annual bills in the 4-5k mark , 2k of that can be just tyres and discs .

I've certainly had cases where new was cheaper than the demo with the same spec .

Early Evoque owners did very well , those that ordered a second car when they picked up their first and took a light hit on the depreciation. I imagine the SQ5 will be the same- as will be the Macan - order today sir- car ready summer ........2015 !

Also the first year tax on a new car is double right? nearly £1000 on most performance cars
You are right Tom & it must be eye watering for those who have got brand new motors with high emissions...I dread to think.

I'm confused. Are they saying cheaper to run? That I believe since nearly all new cars get a service plan thrown in and it's entirely possible to negotiate wheel/tyre insurance on top along with your warranty.

Quite a large discussion going on about this type of thing over on babybmw last week. A few of us bemoaning the 1st year depreciation. but someone pointed out that nearly everyone compares 1 year used prices to the window price of a new one while most people get between 12% - 20% discount.

I remember reading an article saying that a when you factor in the Audi contribution and minimum dealer support on a Q5 you will lose £4.5k in a year. For a new car that's really not bad. I'm not sure how truthful it is though as I see the X3 on the list and have read how good the projected residuals are supposed to be on them. in reality I have a friend that was offered almost 50% for his 18 month old X3 with 15k miles on it.

I think the X3 has been savaged by the Evoque and Q5 - pity lovely car to drive but doesn't seem to have the same cachet as the other two - pity as it's a great drive.

You're probably right. Not to worry, the other 2 will be savaged by the Macan... the Q5 in particular.
